The current study examined the research trends of 1,073 Japanese linguistics papers published from 1973 to 2024 in The Korean Journal of Japanology, from the publisher Korea Association of Japanology. The papers were categorized into four periods, viz. nascent period, growth period, maturity period, and transition period. The nascent period was 1973–1982 when 14 papers were published in total, i.e. an average of 1 paper per year. The early growth period was 1983–1992 when a total of 91 papers were published on Japanese linguistics. The number of papers increased in the following order: grammar, history of the Japanese language, Japanese language education, vocabulary and expressions, phonetics and phonology, sociolinguistics and pragmatics, and scripts and orthography. During the late growth period (1993–2002), 288 papers were published, reflecting a sharp increase probably due to introduction of the university faculty performance evaluation system. The early maturity period was 2003–2012) when the number of publications peaked at 445, indicating heightened interest in Japanese linguistics. This period also marked the emergence of papers on interpretation and translation, most likely influenced by active Korea-Japan exchanges. During the late maturity period (2013–2022), the number of papers started decreasing and reached 206, which can be partly attributed to decrease in graduate student enrollment. During the transition period (2023–2024), 29 papers were published over two years. The decrease in the number of publications compared to the late maturity period can be attributed to multiple factors, such as university reforms, department merges and closures due to decline in the school-age population, as well as diversification of Japan-related academic societies, which led to expansion of publication outlets.

1973년부터 2024년까지 한국일본학회의 『일본학보』에서 발행된 일본어학 논문 1,073편을 맹아기, 성장기, 성숙기, 전환기로 나누어 연구 동향을 살펴보았다. (1) 1973년부터 1982년까지 맹아기의 일본어학 논문은 연 1편으로 총 14편이 실렸다. (2) 1983년부터 1992년까지 성장기 전반부의 일본어학 논문은 총 91편이고, ‘문법’ ‘일본어사’ ‘일본어교육’ ‘어휘･표현’ ‘음성･음운’ ‘사회언어학･화용론’ ‘문자･표기’ 순으로 논문 수가 증가하였다. 1993년부터 2002년까지 성장기 후반부의 일본어학 논문은 총 288편으로 대학교원의 업적평가제도 도입의 영향으로 비약적으로 논문 수가 증가하였다. (3) 2003년부터 2012년까지 성숙기 전반부의 일본어학 논문은 총 445편으로 일본어에 대한 관심이 높아진 것을 영향으로 들 수 있다. 이 시기에 ‘통역･번역’ 분야 논문이 발행되었는데 활발한 한일교류가 영향을 준 것이라고 볼 수 있다. 2013년부터 2022년까지 성숙기 후반부의 일본어학 논문은 206편으로 성장기 후반부(1993년󰠏2002년)보다도 감소하였고, 그 원인 중 하나가 대학원에 진학하는 연구자의 감소가 영향이라고 할 수 있다. (4) 2023년부터 2024년까지 전환기의 일본어학 논문은 2년에 29편의 논문이 발표되었는데, 학령인구 감소로 인해 대학 개혁, 학과 통합이나 폐지와 같은 사정과 일본관련 학회의 다양화로 인해 논문 발행처의 확대가 영향을 미쳐 성숙기 후반부에 비해 논문 수가 적다고 할 수 있다.
