This study analyzed the roles and meanings of food in Korean children’s literature featuring chracters with immigrant backgrounds. Analysis of 46 works published after 2000 revealed seven themes: harmony, symbol of identity, conflict, love and friendship, longing, conflict resolution, and respect for different cultures/religions. The most frequently appearing foods were curry/curry rice and ice cream/ice bar, with most being Korean foods or foods easily accessible in Korea. Among foreign foods, Vietnamese dishes appeared most frequently. Among scenes featuring food, those showing harmony were most common (32 cases), with 41% involving food-sharing between neighbors and also 41% involving food-sharing between friends. These findings demonstrate that food serves as an important medium for expressing relationships and identities in multicultural society within Korean children’s literature. A significant development can be seen in how, over time, there has been an increase in works that move beyond merely highlighting conflict to explore harmony, love, and friendship, along with a growing number of works that give voice to the autonomous perspectives of those with immigrant backgrounds.

본 연구는 이주배경이 있는 등장인물을 그린 한국 어린이문학에서 음식의 역할 과 의미를 분석하였다. 2000년 이후 출판된 46편의 작품을 분석한 결과, 7개의 주제가 도출되었다: 화합, 정체성의 상징, 갈등, 사랑과 우정, 그리움, 갈등의 해 소, 타문화/타종교에 대한 존중. 가장 많이 등장한 음식은 카레/카레라이스와 아 이스크림/아이스바였으며, 대부분이 한국 음식이거나 한국에서 쉽게 접할 수 있 는 음식이었다. 외국 음식 중에서는 베트남 음식이 가장 많이 등장했다. 음식이 등장하는 장면 중 가장 많은 것은 화합을 보여주는 장면(32건)이었으며, 그중 이웃과 음식을 나누는 장면과 친구와 음식을 나누는 장면이 각각 41%씩을 차지 했다. 이러한 분석 결과는 한국 어린이문학에서 음식이 다문화 사회의 관계와 정체성을 표현하는 중요한 매개체로 작용하고 있음을 보여준다. 특히, 시간이 흐름에 따라 갈등만을 부각하는 이야기가 아닌, 갈등 너머의 다음 단계인 화합 과 사랑, 우정을 이야기하는 작품이 증가하고, 이주배경을 가진 이들의 주체적 인 목소리를 담아내는 작품이 점점 늘어나고 있어 의미 있는 진전이라 할 수 있다.
