This study explores the history of Korean diving through the oral accounts of Song Jae-woong, recognized as a pioneer of the sport. Using literature review and in-depth interviews, the research delves into his life and contributions. Song Jae-woong made history by winning a gold medal at the 1970 Bangkok Asian Games, becoming the first and only Korean diving gold medalist. His life story highlights the challenges and struggles of Korean diving from the 1960s onward. Despite facing poor training conditions, Song laid the groundwork for Korea’s international success in diving. The 1980s were a turning point, with Korea building international-standard facilities and fostering global exchanges. Song’s oral accounts reveal key lessons from his experience, providing critical insights into the growth and sustainability of Korean diving. His achievements emphasize the need for continued support and development to ensure Korea’s future competitiveness in the sport.

본 연구는 한국 다이빙의 선구자로 평가받는 송재웅의 구술을 통해 한국 다이빙 역사를 살펴보는 데 있다. 연구 방법은 문헌 고찰과 심층 면담을 활용하여 그의 생애를 심층적으로 탐구하였다. 첫째, 송재웅은 1970년 방콕아시안게임에서 금메달을 획득하며 한국 다이빙 역사상 최 초이자 유일한 금메달리스트로 기록되었다. 둘째, 송재웅을 통해 1960년 대 이후 한국 다이빙 역사의 실상을 알 수 있었다. 셋째, 송재웅은 한국 다이빙이 열악한 환경 속에서도 국제적 성과를 달성할 수 있는 기반을 마련하였다. 넷째, 1980년대는 한국 다이빙이 국제규격의 경기장을 마련 하고, 국제교류의 중요성을 알아가는 시기이다. 이처럼 송재웅의 구술은 한국 다이빙의 발전과 지속 가능한 발전 방향을 모색하는데 중요한 시 사점을 제공한다.
