In IS research, academic research should be rigorous and relevant to practice to ensure the quality of the research. Although IS researchers spend a lot of time and effort applying complex and rigorous methodologies and publishing in top journals, there are few ways for IS researchers to know how their research impacts and contributes to real-world practice. This paper aims to suggest ways in which IS researchers can improve the quality of their research while ensuring that their academic work is relevant to practice. Therefore, this study proposes a systematic approach to establish and improve the research relevance of academic research by proposing an applicability check with practitioners on research theories or research models developed in theory-driven research. The applicability check is a comprehensive solution consisting of three dimensions (i.e., importance, accessibility, and applicability) that allows IS researchers to verify the relevance of their research findings. The applicability check is performed as an additional research process to the general research process, either at the beginning or at the end of the general research process. To demonstrate how the applicability check can be applied to IS practice, two case studies are presented in this study. The results of the case studies showed that the most important dimension for IS practice is the “importance” dimension, which meets the needs of practice. This study presents principles and criteria for conducting and evaluating the applicability check and provides practical guidelines for IS researchers to improve the quality of their research and contribute to the development of IS research as a whole.

IS 연구자는 연구의 품질을 높이기 위해 연구의 엄격성(rigorous)과 실무 관련성(relevance)을 동시에 확보해야 한다. 그러나 현실은 IS 연구자가 많은 시간과 노력을 들여 복잡하고 엄격한 방법론을 적용하여 상위 학술지에 논문을 출판해도, 본인의 연구가 실무의 세계에 어떠한 영향력을 미치는지 알 수 있는 방법은 현재까지는 알려진 바가 적다. 이에 본 논문은 국내 IS 연구자에게 자신의 학술적 연구가 현실 세계에서 실무 관련성을 확보하면서 연구의 품질을 개선할 수 있는 방법을 제안하는 것에 목적이 있다. 이를 위해 본 연구는 IS 연구자가 IS 실무자와 함께 연구 이론 또는 연구 모델에 대해 실무 적용 가능성 점검(applicability check)을 수행할 것을 제안한다. 실무 적용 가능성 점검은 학술적 연구의 실무 관련성 수립 및 개선을 위한 체계적 접근 방식으로, IS 연구자가 세 가지 차원(i.e., 중요성(importance), 접근성(accessibility), 적용 가능성(applicability))에서 자신의 연구 결과에 대한 실무 관련성을 평가할 수 있다. 본 연구는 IS 연구자들에게 실무 적용 가능성 점검 방법 적용에 대한 이해를 구체적으로 돕기 위해, 다른 유형의 2가지 적용 사례를 본문에서 제시하였다. 본 연구는 실무 적용 가능성 점검의 수행 및 평가 원칙과 체계적인 접근 방법을 제시함으로써 IS 연구의 엄격성과 실무 관련성의 균형에 대한 단초를 제공하고 나아가 전체적인 IS 연구발전에 기여할 수 있다.
