This study reexamines the formation of the Korean Jazz Band, Korea’s first jazz ensemble, which emerged during the early introduction of Western music in the 1920s. The Korean Jazz Band represents a pioneering attempt to fuse Western jazz with traditional Korean musical elements. This study critically examines the widely accepted academic assertion that the band was established in 1926, offering evidence from newspaper articles and historical records to argue that its founding actually occurred in 1928. A key focus is the origins of , known in Korea as <수음로상행진곡(樹陰路上行進曲)>, often considered the country’s first jazz composition. By confirming its authorship by Edwin Frank Goldman and its classification as a march, this study highlights early Korean perceptions of jazz and its cultural adaptation. Following its founding, the Korean Jazz Band gained widespread popularity through radio broadcasts, press coverage, and national tours. Rooted in early hot jazz, the band’s music integrated Korean sensibilities and traditional themes, forging a distinct musical identity. Rather than merely imitating Western trends, the band pioneered a creative reinterpretation of global music, expanding the possibilities of Korean popular music. By situating the Korean Jazz Band within the sociocultural and musical landscape of 1920s Korea, this study reassesses its pivotal role in Korean jazz and popular music history. Addressing a significant gap in scholarship, it illuminates the formation of a unique cultural identity where tradition and modernity coexist, contributing to a broader understanding of Korean popular music’s evolution.

본 논문은 1920년대 한국에서 결성된 코리안재즈밴드의 활동과 역사적 의의를 심층적으로 분석한다. 코리안재즈밴드는 한국 최초의 재즈밴드로 평가되며, 그 결성과 활동은 서양 재즈와 한국 음악적 전통의 융합이라는 독창적인 시도로 주목받는다. 본 연구는 기존 학계에서 통설로 받아들여졌던 코리안재즈밴드의 결성 연도(1926년설)를 비판적으로 검토하고, 당시 신문 기사 및 역사적 자료를 바탕으로 이들이 1928년에 결성되었음을 새롭게 규명하였다. 특히, 우리나라에서 첫 재즈곡으로 일컬어지는 <수음로상행진곡(樹陰路上行進曲)>의 실체를 분석하여 이 곡이 미국 작곡가 에드윈 프랑코 골드먼(Edwin Franko Goldman)의 행진곡 임을 확인하였다. 이를 통해 초창기 한국 재즈에 대한 대중의 이해와 당시 재즈의 수용 과정을 조명하였다. 1928년에 결성된 코리안재즈밴드는 라디오 프로그램과 신문을 통해 소개되며 대중적 인기를 얻었고, 전국 순회공연을 통해 새로운 대중음악의 패러다임을 제시하였다. 이들의 음악은 악기 구성에서 초기 핫재즈(Hot Jazz)의 면모를 확인할 수 있으면서도 한국적 정서와 전통적인 음악적 요소를 융합하여 독창적인 음악적 정체성을 형성하였다. 또한 코리안재즈밴드의 활동은 단순한 서양 문화의 모방을 넘어 한국 대중음악의 새로운 가능성을 열었다는 점에서 의의가 있다. 본 논문은 코리안재즈밴드의 사례를 통해 당시 한국 사회에 근대적 문화와 음악적 다양성이 확산하는 양상을 조명하고 한국 대중음악사 및 재즈사 연구의 중요한 전환점을 제시한다. 이러한 연구는 한국 음악사의 빈틈을 메우고, 나아가 전통과 현대가 공존하는 대중음악의 형성 과정을 이해하는 데 이바지할 것이다.
