This study is a preliminary investigation into the formalization of Chosŏn Exam Writing (科文) in the late seventeenth century. This study examines and classifies collections of exam writings (科文集) housed at the National Library of Korea, the Kyujanggak Institute for Korean Studies at Seoul National University, and the Jangseogak Archives of the Academy of Korean Studies. These collections are categorized into two types: First, the works of multiple authors without a clear editing principle. Second, a systematic catalogue of exam-related information based on certain parameters. This study uses the information found in the latter collection to examine the emerging culture surrounding civil service examinations during that period. The kwapyo (科表), an exam rhymed prose for the emperor, began systematically compiling shigwon (試券, actual exam papers) around the 1670s and was subsequently incorporated into these collections. Thereafter, kachaek (科策, exam policy answers) were compiled in a similar form and structure, followed by kwashi (科詩, exam poetry) and kwabu (科賦, exam rhymed prose) from the 1730s. This trend coincides with the period of increased kwashi (課試, school exams) at Sungkyunkwan (成均館) and sahak (四學) in Seoul, suggesting a significant connection between them. Future research can examine the contents of these exam writings to provide a comprehensive discussion on when and how Chosŏn Exam Writing became standardized and formalized.

본고는 숙종대 과문 문체의 변화 문제를 살펴보기 위한 예비적 고찰이다. 본고는 먼저 국립중앙도서관, 서울대학교 한국학연구원 규장각, 한국학중앙연구원 장서각에 소장 중인 과문집들을 조사하여, 18세기 이전 작자의 작품들을 포함하고 있는 과문집들을 선별․분류하였다. 이 과문집들은 크게 두 가지 유형으로 분류되었는데, 하나는 여러 작자의 과문들을 정확한 원칙 없이 수록한 과문집이고, 다른 하나는 각종 시험 관련 정보들을 정확히 수록하고, 이들을 일정한 기준에 의해 배열한 과문집이다. 본고에서는 후자의 과문집들에 드러난 정보들을 활용하여, 새롭게 형성된 당대 과거시험 관련 문화를 살펴본다. 과표(科表)는 대략 1670년대부터 실제 시권들이 체계적으로 수집되어, 과문집에 편차되었다. 이후로 과책(科策) 모음집이, 그리고 1730년대부터는 진사시(進士試)의 주요 과목이던 과시(科詩)와 과부(科賦) 모음집이 역시 비슷한 형태와 원칙으로 편집되고 있었음을 밝혔다. 이러한 경향은 성균관(成均館)과 사학(四學)의 과시(課試)가 활성화되는 시점과 시기적으로 일치한다는 점에서 양자 간에 상당한 연관 관계가 있음을 암시한다. 후속 연구에서는 이 문헌들에 편차된 실제 시권들의 내용 검토를 통해, 조선의 과문 문체가 정형화되는 시점과 그 양상에 대해 자세하게 논할 것이다.
