This study analyzes the tales of the Martian region to identify the patterns of transmission and regional characteristics. To achieve this, we categorized the tales from the Martian region and represented them on a map. The study found that the tales in the Hwaseong region were passed down according to geographical characteristics. First, the tales were divided into coastal and inland regions, each reflecting distinct characteristics. For example, in the case of village myths, the maiden myth was passed down as a legend reflecting unique characteristics of the regional coast. However, unlike other regions, the souls of maidens were venerated; however, except for their powers, the process of deification was not passed down. Second, the tales about filial piety and virtuous women were mainly characterized by inland regions, stories with filial piety motifs were passed down, emphasizing a practical moral code. While the filial piety motif is transmitted as a reflection of the dominant ideology, in the case of the Hwaseong region, we found that this ideology was transformed when protagonists who acted independently were recounted. Third, the tales of the Hwaseong region were transmitted as a reflection of geographical proximity to the center. In particular, the region is characterized by a low number of character legends. Most characters were described as superhuman legends, though they were also depicted as tragic figures. This is likely because it was passed down as a reflection of the ruling class ideology, owing to its proximity to the center of the country. Therefore, the baby general tale was also influenced by the transmission of the “winged type” where parents tragically caused their child’s death owing to perceiving its heroic extraordinariness as a threat to the kingship. Fourth, the Hwaseong region was a geopolitical region adjacent to the country’s center, which served as a 별서(別墅). This suggests the possibility of ethical edification, with our focus on the goblin stories. The Goblin stories are equivalent to mythological tales. However, in the Hwaseong region, Goblin stories are characterized by their transformation into slang and are passed down with an educational function. The educational function of the tales are in perpetuating “taboos” related to women, reinforcing the internalization of the feudal social order.

이 글은 화성 지역에서 전승되는 설화를 바탕으로 전승 양상을 확인하고, 지역적 특성을 구명하는 데에 목적이 있다. 이를 위하여 화성 지역에서 전승되고 있는 설화를 대상으로 유형을 분류하고, 지도에 기호화하였다. 그 결과 화성 지역의 설화는 지리적 특성이 반영되어 전승되고 있는 것을 확인할 수 있었다. 그 특징으로는 첫째, 해안지역과 내륙지역으로 대별되어 각각의 특징이 반영되어 전승되고 있었다. 여서낭 신화의 경우 해안이라는 지역적 특징이 반영되면서, 다른 해안 지역과 마찬가지로 서낭신앙이 전설로 전승되고 있었다. 하지만 다른 지역과 달리 여서낭이면서 처녀의 혼을 숭상하고 있으나 신격화 되는 과정은 전승되지 않고 직능만이 전승되고 있었다. 둘째, 효․열설화의 경우 주로 내륙지역에서 나타나고 있는 특징으로, 실제적인 정려문을 중심으로 효행이 모티프가 되는 설화들이 전승되었다. 효행 모티프는 지배 이데올로기적 관념이 반영되어 전승되지만 화성 지역의 경우는 일방적인 희생을 다루는 추상적인 윤리관이 아닌 자신의 상황에 직면하고, 주체적으로 행동하였던 주인공들이 회자되면서 지배 이데올로기의 관념이 변용되어 전승되고 있는 것을 확인하였다. 셋째, 화성지역의 설화는 중앙과 인접한 지정학적 위치가 반영되어 전승되고 있었다. 특히 인물전설이 미약한 것이 특징이라고 할 수 있는데, 그 인물전설이 초인담으로 전승되고 있으나 비극적 인물로 전승되고 있었다. 이는 중앙의 인접지역이라는 특징으로 인하여 지배층의 이데올로기를 그대로 반영하여 전승되고 있기 때문인 것으로 보인다. 때문에 아기장수 설화 또한 영웅적 비범성이 왕권을 위협하는 요소로 작용하여 부모가 자신의 아이를 비극적인 죽음에 이르게 하는 ‘날개형’이 전승되어 이에 대한 영향을 받은 것으로 해명하였다. 넷째, 화성지역은 중앙과 인접한 지정학적 위치로, 별서(別墅)의 역할을 하였던 곳이다. 이에 자연스럽게 윤리적 교화의 가능성을 확인할 수 있는데, 본고가 주목한 이야기는 도깨비 설화이다. 도깨비 설화는 신이담(神異譚)에 해당하는 이야기이다. 하지만 화성 지역에서는 도깨비 설화가 속신어로 변용되어 교육적 기능을 하면서 전승되는 특징이 있다. 그 교육적 기능은 여성과 관련된 ‘금기’를 담고 있어 봉건사회의 질서를 내면화하고 있는 것을 확인하였다.
