This study examines 67 folk songs from 47 recordings collected in Hwaseong, Gyeonggi Province, as part of the original recordings of MBC (Munhwa Broadcasting Corporation)’s Korean Traditional Folk Songs. The findings are as follows. The most common type of folk song is farming songs, with songs for weeding a rice paddy being particularly diverse and abundant. These include Eolkadeong’eori, Bang’a-taryeong, Sangsa-sori, Dulle-sori, Mondeul (Meondeul)-sori, and Myeonsaeng’i. Regionally, Paltan-myeon has the richest collection of farming songs. Other notable farming-related songs include those for leveling a rice paddy bank with a big spade, transplanting rice seedlings, plowing a field, and irrigating a rice paddy by scooping water. Beyond farming songs, there are also one rowing chanty, songs for hardening the ground of a house site, one song for cutting wood, one lullaby, songs for dandling a baby, and one song for spinning cotton. Seasonal festival songs include ritual songs for good fortune, while funeral songs, such as songs for carrying a bier and songs for hardening a grave, are well developed. Children’s songs include The Toad Song (Building a Sand House), Catching a Dragonfly, and Counting Legs. Entertainment songs feature Beggar’s Song, Beombeok-Taryeong, Dambagu-Taryeong, Yukja-Baegi, San (Mountain)-Yeombul, and Loom Song. Regarding tonal systems, Menari-jo is the most common, with a particularly high concentration of Menari-jo songs in Dongtan-myeon and Paltan-myeon. The next most prevalent is Changbutaryeong-jo, especially in Songsan-eup and Hyangnam-myeon. Additionally, Paltan-myeon and Songsan-eup have five songs in Odolttogi-jo, while Songsan-eup and Hyangnam-myeon contain two songs in Yukjabaegi-jo. There is also one song in Bettlga-jo from Paltan-myeon. Other noteworthy discoveries include three songs in a shouting style and one utilizing a two-note scale. Some songs exhibit mixed tonal systems, such as a combination of Menari-jo and Changbutaryeong-jo, or Odolttogi-jo and Changbutaryeong-jo. The most common time signature is 4/♩., with additional occurrences of irregular slow and flexible rhythms, as well as 3/♩. and 2/♩., and 4/4 time. The predominant singing style is call and response, though other methods include solo singing, give-and-take exchanges, unison singing, and call and response following unison singing. The rich variety of folk songs in Hwaseong - including their diverse types, tonal systems, and the mutual influences between tonal structures - demonstrates their cultural significance. These songs hold great potential as a future cultural heritage of Hwaseong, as material for developing new regional content, and as a means of enriching the cultural diversity of the Hwaseong region.

화성지역 문화유산의 고른 발전을 도모하고, 새로운 콘텐츠 개발의 소재를 확장하며, 화성지역 문화의 다양성을 보완하기 위한 기초작업으로서 MBC 『한국민요대전전』의 원본자료에 수록된 경기도 화성군 47개 파일 67곡의 민요에 대해 고찰한 결과는 다음과 같다. 농업노동요(농요)의 비중이 가장 높으며, 이 중 특히 논매는소리는 얼카덩어리, 방아타령, 상사소리, 두울레소리, 몬들(먼들)소리, 면생이 등 다양하고 풍부한 양상을 보인다. 지역적으로는 팔탄면의 농요가 가장 풍부하다. 그 외 논둑가래질소리, 모심는소리, 밭가는소리, 용두레질소리 등이 있다. 농요 외 노젓는소리, 집터다지는소리, 나무하는소리, 자장가, 아이어르는소리, 실잣는소리 등이 있다. 세시의례요에는 축원, 액맥이가 있으며, 장례요인 상여소리와 무덤다지는소리가 상당히 발달해있다. 동요에는 두꺼비노래, 잠자리잡기노래, 다리세기노래가, 유흥요에는 각설이타령, 범벅타령, 담바구타령, 육자배기, 산염불, 베틀노래 등이 있다. 음조직 중 메나리조가 가장 많으며, 동탄면과 팔탄면에 특히 많다. 다음으로 창부타령조는 송산읍과 향남면에 많다. 오돌또기조는 팔탄면과 송산읍에 모두 5곡 있으며, 육자배기조 2곡은 송산읍과 향남면에, 베틀가조는 팔탄면에 1곡 있다. 그 외 구령조 3곡과 2음음계 1곡이 있다. 메나리조에 창부타령조의 핵음변이, 창부타령조에 메나리조의 구성음변이, 메나리조와 오돌또기조에 창부타령조의 구성음변이를 보이는 곡이 각 1곡씩 있다. 3분박 4박자가 가장 많으며, 느리고 신축적인 불규칙박자가 모두 9곡, 그리고 3분박 3박자, 3분박 2박자, 2분박 4박자 등이 있다. 메기고받는방식이 가장 많으며, 그 외 독창, 교환창, 제창, 제창 후 메기고받는방식 등이 있다. 화성 민요의 다양한 갈래와 음조직, 그리고 음조직 상호영향에 의한 변이 등 다채로운 양상은 향후 화성의 문화유산으로서, 또 새로운 지역 콘텐츠 개발의 소재로서, 나아가 화성지역 문화의 다양성을 보완할 씨앗으로서 의미 있는 잠재성을 보여준다.
