Recently constructed emergency departments in local medical centers have been equipped with specialized emergency facilities and strict infection control measures, necessitating professional planning. This study aims to investigate and analyze the spatial and functional changes in emergency departments throughout their developmental process, identify trends in spatial structure modifications, and provide architectural planning data for emergency departments. The research findings are as follows: First, the net area of emergency departments in the surveyed medical centers has increased by approximately 4.1 to 5.8 times over a period of less than 40 years compared to their initial area at the time of the main building's construction. Second, the transformation of emergency departments occurs in three main ways: relocation to better suit the given environment, horizontal expansion, and securing additional space by reallocating areas from other internal departments. Third, during the transformation process from the initial construction period to the present, the spatial composition of emergency departments has become increasingly subdivided and functionally specialized.

최근 건립되고 있는 지방의료원 응급부는 전문적인 응급시설과 엄격한 감염관리시설을 갖추게 되어 전문 적인 계획이 필요하다. 본 연구에서는 지방의료원 응급부의 변천과정에서 공간과 기능의 변화를 조사 분석하여, 응급부 공간구조의 변화 방향을 파악하여 응급부의 건축계획적 자료를 제시를 목적으로 한다. 연구결과로 첫째, 조사대상 의료원의 응급부 순면적은 본관 건립시 응급부 순면적보다 현재까지 약 40년이 채 안 된 기간 동안 4.1 배∼5.8배 증가하였다. 둘째, 응급부의 변화는 주어진 환경에서 맞도록 이전하는 경우와 수평증축하는 경우 그리고 내부 타부문의 면적을 확보하는 경우로 변화한다. 셋째, 본관 건립시기에 응급부에서 현재까지 변화과정 중에 공 간구성은 세분화되고 기능화되는 경향이 있다.
