This study analyzes Hideki Noda’s adaptation and parody of Shakespeare’s works, focusing on A Night at the Kabuki and Fakespeare, while exploring his theatrical strategies and creative techniques. Noda does not merely reproduce Shakespeare’s originals; rather, he merges Japan’s historical and contemporary contexts with Shakespearean texts, reconstructing them through adaptation and parody to generate a new theatrical language. This study employs Linda Hutcheon’s theories of parody and adaptation to examine the intertextuality and trans-contextualization in Noda’s works, analyzing how these techniques expand the theatrical meaning of his productions. To achieve this, the study first reviews how Shakespeare has been received in Japanese theater and examines how Noda’s approach differs from other directors. Second, it discusses how A Night at the Kabuki employs trans-contextualization by integrating a nonlinear temporal structure, the intersection of Japanese historical contexts with Western narratives, and the fusion of popular culture with traditional performing arts. Third, it explores how Fakespeare deconstructs Shakespeare’s four great tragedies, intertwines them with the Japan Airlines Flight 123 disaster, and employs parodic devices that blur the boundaries between fiction and reality, ultimately subverting the meaning of authenticity and imitation. Through this analysis, the study demonstrates that Noda’s works do not simply juxtapose Japanese traditions with Western classics but actively deconstruct and reconfigure them through a creative process. This research contributes to the understanding of how parody and adaptation function as socially and philosophically significant artistic tools in contemporary theater. In addition, this study aims to illuminate how Hideki Noda's work does not just combine traditional Japanese aesthetics with Shakespeare's narrative, but also modern Japanese society and individuals recognize the past and self-recognize and reconstruct their identity and culture through it. Through this, I would like to argue that Hideki Noda's work is an important example of expanding the possibility of parody and adaptation of not only Japanese theater but also contemporary theater.
