This study describes the activities of Baek Cho-wol(백초월), who is considered an important figure in the history of the Korean Buddhist independence movement, from the perspective of Tongdosa Temple. Until now, no attempt has been made to explore the transcendence of the White Moon from the perspective of Tongdosa Temple. So, I wrote this article from the following perspective. First, the content and nature of instructor Baek Chowol's activities were summarized. Baek Cho-wol worked as a lecturer at Byeoksongsa Temple, Beomeosa Temple, Haeinsa Temple, Okcheonsa Temple, Donghaksa Temple, and Woljeongsa Temple. In this article, I also discovered the activities of instructors at Tongdosa Temple. Baek Cho-wol was outstanding in his ability to read scriptures, but what made him special was his sense of nationalism. He served as a lecturer to promote national consciousness among scholars, secure independence funds, and discover independent agents. Second, Baek Cho-wol left behind various histories at Tongdosa Temple. He was a lecturer in 1914, acquired independent funds at Tongdosa Temple, and had various relationships with Kim Gu-ha(김구하). In particular, Kim Gu-ha recommended Baek Cho-wol as a lecturer and had Baek Cho-wol write for the anthology of his teacher and his anthology of his trip to Mt. Geumgang. In addition, the body of Baek Cho-wol, which had been buried by the Japanese, was taken over from a cemetery near Cheongju Prison. Third, it emphasized the collection of data on the modern Buddhist independence movement scattered throughout Tongdosa Temple. Until now, the subject had been focused on the monks of Tongdosa Temple and Han Yong-un, but now they insisted on including Baek Cho-wol. The data will have to be a synthesis of documents, writings, testimonies, news articles, etc. I hope that this article, written with the above focus, will be used to explore the history of Tongdosa in the modern era, the history of Baekchwol, and the history of Kim Gu-ha and Han Yong-un.

본 고찰은 한국불교 독립운동사에 중요한 인물로 평가되는 백초월의 행 적을 통도사의 관점에서 서술한 글이다. 지금껏 백초월의 탐구를 통도사의 측면에서는 시도하지 않았다. 그래서 필자는 아래의 관점에서 이 글을 집 필하였다. 첫째, 백초월 강사 활동의 내용과 성격을 정리하였다. 백초월은 벽송사, 범어사, 해인사, 옥천사, 동학사, 월정사 등에서 강사로 활동하였다. 필자는 이 글에서 통도사에서의 강사 활동을 찾아냈다. 백초월은 경전에 대한 실 력이 뛰어났지만, 민족의식을 겸비한 것이 특별하였다. 그는 학인들에게 민족의식 고취, 독립 자금의 확보, 독립요원 발굴 등을 위해 강사 역할을 수행하였다. 둘째, 백초월은 통도사에 다양한 역사를 남겼다. 그는 1914년에 강사, 통 도사(구하)에서 독립 자금 인수, 김구하와 다양한 인연 등이었다. 특히 김 구하는 백초월을 강사로 추천하고, 그의 은사의 문집과 자신의 금강산 여 행의 문집에 백초월이 글을 쓰도록 하였다. 그리고 일제가 파묻은 백초월 의 시신을 청주교도소의 인근 공동묘지에서 인수하기도 하였다. 셋째, 통도사에서 산재되어 있는 근대기 불교 독립운동의 자료 수집을 강조했다. 지금껏 그 대상은 통도사 승려와 한용운에 집중되어 있었으나, 이제는 백초월을 포함시킬 것을 주장하였다. 그 자료는 문건, 유묵, 증언, 보도기사 등이 종합되어야 할 것이다. 이상과 같은 초점에서 서술된 이 글이 근대기 통도사, 백초월의 역사, 김구하 및 한용운의 역사 탐구에 활용되길 바란다.
