This paper analyzes how Michael Longley employs a poetics of memory to navigate the politics of Irish commemoration, which often reinforces a reductive historical dichotomy between Catholic nationalists and Protestant unionists. First, his poetics of memory transcends the conventional politics of commemoration. By utilizing the imagery of poppies that symbolically links World War I and the Troubles, Longley offers alternatives to a binary perspective on commemoration. Second, his poetics of memory reflects the post-1916 generation’s sense of nostalgia, enabling the poet to envision a solidarity among historical victims. Longley explores unrealized possibilities from the past, juxtaposing the victims of World War I with those of the Troubles to challenge and demystify the prevailing politics of commemoration.
