In this article, I will attempt to look at how Heaney uses the image of bog in some of his poems—which is both a physical storehouse and a symbol of Ireland’s psychical memory—to meditate on the experience of violence in Northern Ireland. In the bog poems, the poet descends the bog to reveal its victims so that they could be judged for and against their deeds. This process of revelation becomes a metaphor for poetic process, as Heaney writes in his 1974 essay, “Feeling into Words.” The poems such as “The Tollund Man,” “Punishment,” and “Kinship,” Heaney parallel the ancient and modern instances of violence to show the repeated pattern of violence founded on belief that is no longer valid.
