Seon counseling is a form of counseling based on Seon Buddhist psychology. Linji’s Seon counseling can be examined from two aspects: goal and methodology. From the perspective of the goal, Linji aims for the right view. From the perspective of emptiness, the Dharma, Buddha, and mind have no form, cannot be obtained, sought, found, or achieved; they are all just names. This way, affairs cease, thoughts rest, there is no cultivation, and one simply trusts and allows the functioning of that which is operating. The focus is not on the external, but on that which functions internally. This is the attitude that a counselor should possess and the goal that a client should strive towards. From a Seon counseling perspective, Linji emphasizes curing illnesses and removing fetters. He completely perceives the client’s capacity, responds, reflects, strikes down dualistic thinking and external objects, and blocks them. While the four guest-host situations show the relationship between counselor and client based on the presence or absence of the right view, the four classifications freely take away the expansiveness and outward orientation of the subject and object. In the four operations of shining and functioning, verbal methods and behavioral methods are used with a time difference. At this time, the methodology of letting go and holding back is used, through which the client is led to the goal. Ultimately, Linji’s Seon counseling can be seen as the right view and function in terms of goal and method. While traditional Seon counseling focuses on connectivity, Linji’s Seon counseling goes a step further by adding immediacy and functionality

선상담은 선불교심리학에 기반한 상담이다. 임제의 선상담은 목표와 방법론이라는 두 가지 측면에서 살펴볼 수 있다. 목표의 관점에서 임제는 올바른 견해를 추구한다. 제법공상의 관점에서 법, 부처, 마음은 형상도 없고, 얻을 수도 없고, 구할 수도 없고, 찾을 수도 없고, 이룰 수도 없고, 모두 이름일 뿐이다. 이렇게 되면 일은 없어지고, 생각은 쉬게 되고, 닦지 않고, 단지 작용하는 바로 그것에 신뢰를 보내고 기능하도록 한다. 밖에 있는 것이 아니라 안에서 작용하는 그것에 초점을 맞춘다. 이는 상담가가 갖추어야 할 자세이고 내담자가 나아가야 할 목표이다. 선상담의 관점에서 임제는 치병해박에 중점을 두고 있고, 내담자의 근기를 모조리 알아차리고 응하고 비추고 이분법적 사고와 외부대상을 쳐버리고 막아버린다. 사빈주에서 올바른 견해의 유무에 따른 상담가와 내담자의 관계를 보여준다면, 사료간에서는 주관과 대상의 확장성과 외향성을 자유롭게 뺏으며, 사조용에서는 조와 용, 즉 언어적 방법과 행위적 방법을 시차를 두면서 사용한다. 이때에 방할의 방법론이 사용되며, 이를 통해서 내담자를 목표로 이끈다. 결국 임제의 선상담은 목표와 방법의 측면에서 올바른 견해와 작용으로 볼 수 있다. 기존의 선상담이 연결성에 중점을 두고 있다면 임제의 선상담은 여기서 한 걸음 더 나아가 즉시성과 작용성을 추가하고 있다고 할 수 있다.
