This paper examines the establishment of Gobul Chongnim by Master Man-am and its continuation efforts by Master Seo-ong. Gobul Chongnim was founded after the liberation of Korea to restore the identity of Korean Buddhism through a practice-centered approach and to contribute to Korean society. It aimed to establish an expanded community that was not limited to individual temples but had regional and social dimensions. Temples in the Honam region participated, along with lay Buddhists, to form a new Buddhist model that embodied social solidarity and responsibility through inter-temple solidarity and interaction with the local community. Master Seo-ong strived to restore Gobul Chongnim after it was interrupted by the Korean War. He endeavored to strengthen the institutional integrity of Chongnim and launched the “Association Movements of the True Person” to emphasize the social role of Buddhism in modern society. Although Gobul Chongnim did not last long, its spirit of solidarity should be inherited today to pave the way for growth between local communities and temples.

이 논문은 만암스님이 창립한 고불총림과 서옹스님의 계승 노력을 검토한다. 고불총림은 해방 후 한국불교의 정체성을 수행 중심으로 회복하고, 한국사회 기여를 목표로 설립되었다. 개별 사찰에 국한되지 않고 지역적·사회적으로 확대된 공동체를 지향하였다. 호남지역의 사찰들이 참여하였고, 재가불자도 참여하였다. 사찰 간 연대와 지역사회와의 상호작용을 통해 사회적 연대와 책임성을 구현하는 새로운 불교 모델을 제시하였다. 서옹스님은 한국전쟁으로 중단된 총림을 복원하기 위해 노력하였다. 총림의 사격을 갖추기 위해 노력하였고, ‘참사람결사운동’을 시작해 불교의 사회적 역할을 강조하였다. 고불총림은 오래 지속되지 못했으나, 오늘날 그 결사정신을 계승해 지역사회와 사찰이 함께 성장할 수 있는 길로 제시되어야 한다.
