The New Urbanism movement, which started after the 1980's, discusses the creation of a sustainable urban environment centered on people and communities. What began as a movement that proposed principles for urban design and development, it is currently influences the practical academic value of urban geography in various ways. Urbanization focused on economic growth has regionally expanded the development of urban areas through industrialization, which has affected sprawl and the collapse of regional identity, and has subsequently led to multifaceted reductions and loss of resilience in new environments such as climate change. Focusing on the various social and environmental problems resulting from urbanization and regional expansion focused on economic growth, new planned attempts centered on communities in the United States and European countries have shown results such as sustainability and resilience, suggesting solutions to urban problems resulting from regional expansion in the era of industrialization and urbanization. The principles of New Urbanism focus on community composition, and they affect the design of key factors necessary for community safety management as well as changes in the global environment due to climate change and the increase in disasters caused by it.

1980년대 이후 논의된 뉴어바니즘 사조는 사람과 커뮤니티 중심의 지속 가능한 도시 환경 조성을 논의하고 있 다. 도시설계와 개발의 원칙을 제안하는 사조에서 출발하여 현재 도시지리학의 실천적 학문 가치에 다양한 방면으로 영향을 미치고 있다. 경제성장에 주목한 도시화는 도시지역의 산업화에 의한 발전을 지역적으로 팽창시키며 스프롤과 지역적 정체성 와해 등에 영향을 미쳤고, 이후 기후변화 등의 새로운 환경에서 다각적인 저감과 복구력의 상실 등으 로 이어졌다. 뉴어바니즘의 원칙은 커뮤니티 구성에 중점을 두고, 기후변화에 의한 지구 환경의 변화와 이에 의한 재 난의 증대는 물론 커뮤니티 안전관리에 필요한 주요 요인 설계에 영향을 주고 있다. 책임감 있는 공동체의 지역사회 통합은 환경적 보전력은 물론 사회 환경의 안정과 자연 환경의 복원 등과 함께 도시의 문제를 해결하는데 동력이 되 는 주요한 계획 요소가 되고 있다. 본 연구는 서울시의 교통사고를 사례로 각 구별 특성을 분석하고, 뉴어바니즘이 강조하는 친보행자 환경과 공동체 중심의 개발이 지역사회의 안정성에 어떻게 유용하게 적용될 수 있는지 논의해보 고자 한다. 교통사고는 지역적 환경과 밀접한 관련이 있고, 특히 인구구조와 상당히 연계되어 지역의 특성을 반영한 교통 환경의 개선이 필요하다.
