The purpose of this study is to clarify the role and expertise of a school health teacher. We discussed the professionalism, role, and duties of school health teachers based on legal grounds, and examined the changes in the status of school health teachers, the significance of the training process and employment examination, the duties of school health teachers actually required in schools, and their relevance. The results of the analysis revealed the following: first, it is problematic to demand excessive medical-related duties from school health rooms that are not medical institutions; second, the sub-contents required in relation to health education exceed the scope of the school health teacher’s expertise; third, there is a conflict in the roles of school health teachers who must provide health education classes and health guidance in the school health room; and fourth, school health teachers are being charged with duties that should not be assigned to them, such as environmental hygiene management. A school health teacher can be someone who has studied specialized medical knowledge necessary for nursing at a nursing college, obtained a nursing license, and completed an additional teacher training course. Therefore, a role based on the expertise that can be accumulated through the training course should be assigned.

비교과교사로서 불안정한 위상을 지니고 있는 보건교사의 직무나 업무, 삶, 지위, 변천 등에 대한 연구가 다방면으로 이루어져 왔으나, 각각의 주제를 중심으로 단편적으 로 이루어져 온 측면이 있다. 본 연구에서는 보건교사의 역할, 전문성에 대한 분석을 ‘지위-양성과정-임용시험-현장직무’와의 관련성 속에서 분석하고자 하였다. 법적인 근거를 바탕으로 보건교사의 지위 변화, 양성과정 및 임용시험의 의미, 학교현장에서 실 제 요구되는 보건교사의 직무, 그 관련성 등을 살펴보았다. 분석 결과, 첫째, 의료기관 이 아닌 학교의 보건실에서 과도한 의료 관련 직무를 요구하는 것은 문제가 있다는 점, 둘째, 보건교육과 관련하여 요구되는 하위내용들이 보건교사의 전문성의 범위를 넘어 서고 있다는 점, 셋째, 환경위생관리 등 보건교사에게 부과되어서는 안 되는 직무가 부 과되고 있다는 점 등이 도출되었다. 결론적으로 보건교육을 위한 수업과 보건실에서 보건지도를 해야 하는 보건교사의 역할 충돌이 일어난다는 점을 알 수 있었다. 보건교 사는 간호대학에서 간호에 필요한 전문적인 의료지식을 학습하고, 간호사 면허를 취득 한 자 중, 교직과정을 추가로 이수한 자가 될 수 있다. 그런 만큼 양성과정을 통해 쌓을 수 있는 전문성에 근거한 역할이 부과되어야 할 것이다.
