초록

영어

For the purposes of this study, the texts under consideration are the first edition of Banno by Yim Jae-man published in 1969, the revised edition published in 1976, and the complete edition published in 1995. Originally, 􋺷Banno􋺸 was a short story included in the novel collection 􋺷Banno􋺸, but it was later revised into a full-length novel and published as a paperback, so for convenience, I will refer to it as 􋺷Banno􋺸 rather than 􋺷Banno􋺸. The purpose of this paper is to examine the ‘obscene ideology’ that dominated the 1960s and 70s, and the censorship of books, and to explore the differences between the original and the adapted works, in order to understand how these periods influenced the author and his works. Yeom Jae-man was born in 1934 in Eumseong, Chungcheongbuk-do, and graduated from the Department of Creative Writing at Seorabal University of the Arts. His novel Banno was recommended by novelist Ahn Soo-gil in 1969, and he began his career as a writer. However, Banno was prosecuted in July of the same year for “manufacturing obscene documents,” and although he was acquitted after a six-year and five-month trial, he was once again frustrated by the changed publishing system, which required him to obtain a lead copy certificate through pre-screening censorship before publication. However, Yeom published a revised version of the book, correcting and supplementing what he considered to be deficiencies in the original. Yin's Banno became famous through this handwriting incident, and the work itself is rarely evaluated. In fact, prior research on “Banno” has concentrated on the handwriting incident, with only a few studies on female characters. The existing studies of Kim Hyung-jung and Cho Sung-myeon focus on the obscenity controversy caused by Banno rather than the work itself. In particular, Kim Hyung-jung examines the position of Yeom Jae-man’s Banno through the medical and population issues of the time, and Cho Sung-myeon examines the social background of the time when Banno itself became obscene. Jang Doo-sik’s study examines the femme fatale through the character of Honga in Banno’s work. This study goes a little further than these existing studies and examines the changes in the artist and the work by comparing the original and the adaptation. In fact, 􋺷Banno􋺸 has been underestimated in existing studies. In particular, the original is a mysterious and ambiguous narrative in which two men and women meet for no reason and make animalistic love, leading to their destruction, leaving room for various interpretations. The purpose of this study is to show that although it became famous for the ‘Pilhwa Incident’, it was a work of literary achievement in its own right.
