In this paper, we tried to analyze the meanings of the words ‘people’ and ‘human’ as basic units in terms of synonyms, significance, and polysemy. The differences in the indicative, conceptual, vocabulary, and situational meanings of the two words were examined by finding the differentiated meanings that are not revealed here from a more expansive semantic perspective. Using the survey method, it was found that the words ‘people’ and ‘human’, which are generally classified as synonyms, should be viewed as synonyms used in different contexts or ‘people series’ except for basic meanings in real language life. It is hoped that these studies will be able to provide practical and productive Korean vocabulary teaching-learning methods with an interest in the various semantic dimensions of Korean vocabulary, while providing practical guidelines for foreigners when learning Korean.

이 논문은 ‘사람’과 ‘인간’이라는 단어의 의미를 기본 단위로 하여 동의성, 유의성, 다의성의 측면에서 상황에 따른 분석을 시도하였다. 그리고 여기서 드러나지 않는 분화된 의미들을 다시 더욱 확장된 의미론적 시각 에서 찾아 두 단어의 지시적, 개념적, 어휘적, 상황적 의미 차이를 살펴보 았다. 설문 조사법을 이용하고, 일반적으로 동의어로 분류하는 단어 ‘사람’과 ‘인간’이 실제 언어생활 속에서는 기본적인 의미를 제외하면 각기 다른 맥락에서 쓰이는 유의어 내지는 ‘사람계열’의 동종어로 보아야 한다 는 것을 알 수 있다. 이러한 연구를 통하여 우리말 어휘의 다양한 의미적 차원에 대한 관심을 갖고 보다 실질적이고 생산적인 우리말 어휘 교수- 학습법을 제시하는 한편, 외국인들이 한국어를 배울 때에도 실용적 지침 을 단편적이나마 제공할 수 있기를 바란다.
