A “Jam” is a type of writing to have readers on alert to a tendency to get lazy or weak in mind and correct it just like acupuncture treats human diseases. Jams contain instructive content fully, but they are a great fit as a tool of cultivation as their vessel is a flexible style called literature. A “Myeong” type of writing performs two functions simultaneously. One is to have readers on alert, and the other is to praise and celebrate. Myeongs with the former function have an important characteristic to show an intention for having readers on alert through various materials. That is, “Jam and Myeong” are two genres that sublimate content that could be a lesson and alert in a literary fashion based on the principle of utility. This study first reviewed the genre concepts of “Jam and Myeong” briefly and examined the utility of the “mirror” image in “Jam and Myeong” literature. The study then examined the patterns and the author’s intentions of works about a “mirror” and demonstrated the utility of “Jam and Myeong” as a genre.

‘箴’은 침(針)으로 사람의 질병을 치료하듯이 나태해지거나 악해지려 는 마음을 경계하여 바로잡게 하는 글이다. 그 글에는 교훈적인 내용을 오롯이 담아냈지만, 문학이라는 유연한 문체를 그릇으로 했기에 수양의 도구로 매우 적합하다. 다음으로 ‘銘’은 경계와 송축(頌祝)의 기능을 동 시에 가지고 있다. 이 중에서 경계의 기능을 가진 銘은 다양한 소재를 통해서 경계의 뜻을 나타내는 것이 중요한 특징이다. 즉, ‘箴銘’이라고 하면 교훈과 경계가 될 만한 내용을 효용성의 원리에 입각해서 문학적으 로 승화시킨 장르라 할 수 있다. 본고에서는 먼저 ‘箴銘’의 장르적 개념을 간략히 알아보고 ‘箴銘’ 문학에서 ‘거울[鏡]’의 이미지가 가지는 효용을 살펴보았다. 이어서 ‘거울[鏡]’을 소재로 한 작품을 토대로 그 양상과 작가의 의도를 살펴봄으로써 ‘箴銘’이 가지는 장르적 효용성을 확인해 보았다.
