This study examines the life and artistic contributions of Lee Young-il (1904–1983), a key figure in modern Korean color painting during the Japanese colonial period. Lee’s artistic career, shaped by his early studies in Japan, was distinguished by his refined flower and animal paintings and figurative works, which garnered critical acclaim at the Joseon Art Exhibition. Despite the significant role of Sigol Sonyeo (A Country Girl), one of his representative works, in modern Korean art history, Lee's works, influenced by Japanese artistic styles, were marginalized in the post-liberation art scene, resulting in a subsequent lack of scholarly engagement with his oeuvre. By utilizing newly uncovered materials and oral histories from his descendants, this study analyzes his achievements in the Joseon Art Exhibition, the catalyst for him quitting painting, and his later artistic resurgence in Suwon Region. By highlighting the essence of his oeuvre in flower and animal paintings, this research seeks to reconstruct his artistic legacy and recontextualize the meaning of color painting within the turbulent history of modern Korean art.

이 연구는 근대 채색화단의 주요 화가 이영일(1904~1983)의 생애 및 작품 세계를 고찰한다. 이영일은 일찍이 일본 유학을 경험했으며, 조선미술전람회를 중심으로 정교하고 세련된 화조영모화, 인물화를 발표하여 혁혁한 성공을 거두었다. 오늘날 이영일의 대표작 <시골소녀>는 우리 근대미술사에서 중요한 위치를 점하고 있지만, 그의 작품은 일본화의 영향을 받은 사례로 평가되며 주목받지 못하였고, 학계의 관련 연구 또한 부재하였다. 이에 본고는 최근 발굴된 자료와 이영일 유족의 구술을 바탕으로 조선미전에서의 성과, 절필의 과정, 그리고 노년기 수원에서 다시 한 번 이루어졌던 작품 활동을 분석하여, 채색화로 일관된 그의 예술 세계를 복원하고자 한다. 특히 그의작품 세계가 화조영모화에 기초하였다는 점을 부각하면서 격동기 속 채색화가의 일생을 살펴, 한국 근대미술사에서 채색화의 의미를 새롭게 탐구한다.
