This study explored the meaning of 'good enough teacher' by investigating what the symbol and meaning of the ideal teacher are, what virtues should be cultivated in order to be a good teacher, and what kind of life attitude is necessary for a preservice early childhood teacher. The ideal teacher image, a pledge card to become a good teacher, and advices from meaningful others reported by 188 preservice early childhood teachers were collected as research data. The results of the study showed that ‘tree’ was the most common symbol of ideal teacher and ‘warmly caring and protecting teacher’ was the most ideal teacher among nine categories of symbolic meanings. Second, the greatest virtue that preservice teachers wanted to cultivate in order to be good teachers was ‘love’. Lastly, the most common piece of advice that preservice teachers received from meaningful others was ‘do what you love.’ It was confirmed that an teacher of integrity who provides a sufficiently good environment for the growth and development of infant and toddlers is the ideal teacher and a ‘good enough teacher.’

본 연구는 예비유아교사가 생각하는 이상적인 교사의 상징과 의미를 분석하고, 좋은 교사가 되기 위해 함양해야 하는 덕목과 삶의 태도를 조사함으로써 ‘충분히 좋은 교사’의 의미를 탐색하였다. 예비유아교 사를 188명을 대상으로 이상적인 교사이미지, 좋은 교사가 되기 위한 다짐카드, 의미 있는 타인으로부터 의 조언을 연구자료로 수집하였다. NVivo14프로그램을 이용하여 빈도분석과 Word Cloud분석을 실시하 고 연구대상의 내러티브를 질적분석하였다. 연구결과 첫째, 예비유아교사가 표현한 이상적인 교사이미 지에 등장한 상징물은 총 214개였고, 그 중 ‘나무’가 가장 많았다. 상징물의 의미에 따라 분류한 9개 범주 중 예비유아교사가 생각하는 가장 이상적인 교사상은 ‘따뜻하게 품어주고 보호하는 교사’였다. 둘째, 좋은 교사가 되기 위해 예비유아교사가 함양하길 원하는 최고의 덕목은 ‘사랑’이었고, 책임감, 배려, 끈기, 존중, 친절의 가치도 높이 평가되었다. 마지막으로 예비유아교사가 의미 있는 타인으로부터 가장 많이 받은 조언은 ‘좋아하는 일 하기’였다. 본 연구를 통해 영유아의 성장과 발달을 위해 충분히 좋은 환경을 제공하는 온전한 교사로서 ‘충분히 좋은 교사‘의 의미를 확인하였다.
