This study focused on relative deprivation, driking, and the interaction between these two factors as factors affecting suicidal ideation among middle-aged in their 40s and 50s, who account for the highest proportion of suicides in Korea. This study examined the extent to which relative deprivation and drinking affect suicidal ideation, and analyzed the moderating effect of driking on the relationship between relative deprivation and suicidal ideation. We also analyzed the data separately for male and female. The results showed that relative deprivation had a static effect on suicidal ideation in male and female, but the moderating effect of driking was only valid for male. We suggest the following measures to prevent suicide among middle-aged. First, a multilayered approach to suicide prevention is required. Second, a gender-specific approach to the problem of suicide in middle-agede is needed. Third, support for middle-aged single-person households should be strengthened. Fourth, we need to change the social climate around drinking. Finally, the issue of suicide in middle-aged needs more public attention and multifaceted, ongoing research.

본 연구는 한국의 자살자 중 가장 높은 비중을 차지하는 40-50대 중년 자살생각에 영향을 미치는 요인으로 상대적 박탈감과 음주, 이 두 요인의 상호작용에 주목하였다. 이에 상대적 박탈감과 음주가 자살생각에 미치는 영향 정도를 파악하고, 상대적 발탈감과 자살생각 관계에서 음주의 조절효과를 분석하였다. 또한, 남성과 여성을 구분하여 분석하였다. 분석결과 상대적 박탈감은 남성과 여성의 자살생각에 정적 영향을 주는 것으로 나타났으나 음주의 조절효과는 남성에게만 유효한 것으로 확인되었다. 연구결과를 토대로 중년의 자살을 예방하기 위한 방안을 다음과 같이 제시하였다. 첫째, 자살 예방을 위한 다층적인 접근이 요구된다. 둘째, 중년 자살 문제에 대해 성별 차이를 고려한 접근이 필요하다. 셋째, 중년 1인 가구에 대한 지원이 강화되어야 한다. 넷째, 음주와 관련된 사회적 분위기의 전환이 필요하다. 마지막으로 중년 자살 문제에 대한 사회적 관심과 다각적이고 지속적인 연구가 필요하다.
