This study examines the role of Korean in Japan who contributed to the cooperative movement and social movements in Japan before and after liberation through the life of Kim Tae-wook. Although Kim Tae-wook was a Korean, he worked with local peasants, workers, and residents in Japan to jointly solve problems in their daily lives. He was active in the Japan Cooperative Association, promoted the producerless class movement, and produced various educational programs and textbooks. Kim Tae-wook’s activities are summarized by four characteristics. First, it emphasized the participation of local residents and aimed for solidarity that encompassed workers and peasants. Second, to overcome the limitations of local cooperatives, he developed a consumer cooperative business that organically connected residents, businesses, and administrations. Third, he actively participated in the revitalization of basic member organizations, education and learning programs, and writing materials. Fourth, although he worked closely with the Japanese community, he maintained his national identity as a Korean and was trusted by the Japanese community and his colleagues. His long-term and localized activities laid the foundation for the Japanese cooperative movement. This study is significant in that it reconstructs the life of an under-represented Korean in Japan and examines the impact of his activities on Japanese social movements.

본 연구는 김태욱(일본명 菊田一雄)의 생애를 중심으로 해방 전후 일본 협동조합운동과 사회운동에 기여한 재일조선인의 역할을 고찰하였다. 김태욱은 조선인이었지만, 일본 지역 농민과 노동자, 주민과 함께 생활 전반의 문제를 공동으로 해결하고자 노력하였다. 그는 일본 협동조합연합회에서 활동하며 무산자소비조합을 추진했을 뿐만 아니라, 교육 프로그 램과 교재를 제작하여 협동조합 운동의 기초를 마련했다. 그의 활동은 네 가지 특징을 갖는다. 첫째, 지역 주민의 참여를 강조하며 노동자, 농민을 포괄한 연대를 지향하였다. 둘째, 지역 협동조합의 한계를 극복하기 위해 기업, 행정, 생협을 유기적으로 연결했다. 셋째, 조합원 기초 조직 활성화와 교육학습 프로그램, 저술 활동에 참여하여 협동조합의 기초를 구축했다. 넷째, 일본 사회운동 내에서 민족 정체성을 유지하는 동시에 신뢰를 받았다. 그의 장기적이고 지역 밀착적인 활동은 일본 협동조합운동의 토대가 되었다. 본 연구는 충분히 조명되지 않은 재일조선인의 삶을 재구성하였으며, 그의 활동이 해방 전후 일본 사회운동에 미친 영향을 검토했다는 의의가 있다.
