This study aims to argue that John Milton, recognizing the need for education among ordinary citizens, wrote Paradise Lost as a kind of civic education text by adopting the dialogic format of political pamphlets published during the English Civil War. Milton reinterprets dialogues from pamphlets published by Royalists and Parliamentarians in the 17th century through the conversations between Satan and his followers, as well as between Adam and Eve in Paradise Lost. This approach suggests that, even if the dialogues are not ‘open’ in the sense of freely expressing opinions, Milton believed that the dialogic format itself was useful for civic education. Examining Milton’s thoughts on civic education revealed in his prose wrtitings on education and freedom of the press, as well as the political pamphlet tradition of his time, this study will analyze Paradise Lost and reconsider the existing claim that Milton was an anti-public elitist who was not interested in civic education.

본 연구는 일반 시민에 대한 교육의 필요성을 인식한 존 밀턴 John Milton 이 영국 내란 시기에 간행된 정치 팸플릿의 대화 형식을 차용해 『실락원 Paradise Lost』을 일종의 시민교육 텍스트로 집필했음을 논증하고자 한다. 밀턴은 『실락원』에서 17세기 영국 왕당파와 의회파가 각자의 정치적 의견을 호소하기 위해 출간한 팸플릿에 등장하는 대화들을 사탄과 부하들, 아담과 이브 사이의 대화들을 통해 재현하고 있는데, 이는 그가 자유롭게 의견을 개진하는 ‘열린’ 대화가 아닐지라도 대화의 형식 자체가 시민교육에 유용하다 고 생각했기 때문이다. 본 연구는 교육과 언론의 자유에 대한 밀턴의 산문과 당대의 정치 팜플릿 전통을 검토하여 시민교육에 대한 그의 생각을 확인하 고, 이를 토대로 『실락원』을 분석하며 밀턴이 시민교육 문제에 관심이 없는 반대중(anti-public)적인 엘리트주의 사상가라는 기존의 주장을 재고하고 자 한다.
