The representation of poverty in three Korean novels in the 2020s was analyzed in terms of the character’s mentality. This paper examined how poverty has a negative and destructive effect on social needs, human development, and human relationships. In particular, this article focused on the pattern that emotional problems such as anxiety, depression, self-destruction, shame, humiliation, misery, lethargy, distrust, resignation, loss of self-esteem, and psychological exhaustion that occur in poverty make up a specific mentality. It also confirmed how responses and perceptions of poverty are related to the recent social context, which has significantly changed. “Companion Debt”, “The World of Eun”, and “The Age of Mijo” all interestingly dealt with the shrinking and distortion of residential spaces and workplaces, family and friends and colleagues, cultural life and leisure, and everyday psychology and behavioral patterns by poverty. It is also common that female youth characters who experience social inequality and multi-layered discrimination appear. “Companion Debt” depicts a pattern in which the youth debt destroys the character's social prestige and dignity and loses the desire and control of life. In “The World of Eun”, a person who was assumed to be a harmful and contaminated second- class family and second-class citizen became the subject of hatred and exclusion. “The Age of Mijo” depicts characters who endure mental slaughter while being deprived of options in both labor and housing. The three novels showed that poverty is not caused by individual moral deficiencies, lack of intelligence, or degradation of character, but a harmful and shameful environment and relationship problem, and that we are all vulnerable in a poor society, not poor individuals.

2020년대 한국 단편 소설 세 편에 나타난 가난의 재현 양상을 인물의 심성 차원에서 분석했다. 가난이 사회적 욕구와 인간적 발전, 인간관계를 추구하는 역량에 어떤 부정적이 고 파괴적인 영향을 미치는지를 살펴보았다. 특히 가난에서 발생하는 불안, 우울, 자학, 수치심, 굴욕, 비참, 무기력, 불신, 자존감 상실, 체념, 심리적 탈진 같은 정서적인 문제가 특별한 심성을 형성하는 양상을 주목했다. 가난에 대한 반응과 인식이 두드러지게 변화된 최근의 사회적 맥락과 어떻게 조응하고 있는지도 확인했다. 「반려빚」, 「은의 세계」, 「미조 의 시대」는 주거공간과 일터, 가족과 친구와 동료 관계, 문화생활과 여가, 일상적인 심리와 행동 양상 등이 가난에 의해 위축되고 비틀리는 양태를 생생하게 다룬다. 사회전반적인 불평등과 다차원적인 차별을 경험하는 여성 청년 주인공이 등장한다는 점도 공통적이다. 「반려빚」은 청년 채무가 인물의 사회적 위신과 자존감을 무너뜨리고 삶의 욕망과 통제력 을 앗아가는 양상을 그렸고, 「은의 세계」에서는 유해하고 오염된 열등 가족이자 열등 시민 으로 상정된 인물이 혐오와 배척의 대상이 되며, 「미조의 시대」에서는 노동과 주거 양 영역에서 선택권을 빼앗긴 채 정신적 학살을 감내하는 인물들을 묘사하였다. 가난이 개인 의 도덕적 결함이나 지성의 부족, 품성의 타락에서 비롯된 것이 아니라, 유해하고 수치스 러운 환경과 관계의 문제라는 점, 가난한 개인이 아닌 가난한 사회 속에서는 우리 모두 취약할 수밖에 없는 존재라는 사실을 보여주었다.
