This study aimed to provide foundational data on domestic animal abuse issues by analyzing media reports related to animal abuse through topic modeling and to derive policy suggestions for the prevention and management of animal abuse. The analysis focused on 1,390 media articles related to animal abuse from 2014 to June 2024, provided by BIG KINDS. Using the Latent Dirichlet Allocation (LDA) method for topic modeling, six topics were extracted. The first topic, composed of key words such as filming, Lee Bang-won, broadcasting, incidents, and punishment, was named “Media Animal Abuse.” The second topic, consisting of key words like petitions, punishment, videos, YouTubers, and investigations, was named “Demands for Animal Abuse Penalties.” The third topic, made up of key words such as zoos, management, breeding, standards, and welfare, was named “Animal Welfare in Zoos.” The fourth topic, which included key words like allegations, incidents, sentencing, imprisonment, and trials, was named “Penalties for Animal Abuse.” The fifth topic, composed of key words such as incidents, corpses, investigations, reports, and scenes, was named “Investigations of Animal Abuse Cases.” The sixth topic, consisting of key words like rescue, adoption, organizations, abandonment, and companion animals, was named “Animal Protection Organization Rescue Activities.” Through the analysis of these topics, policy directions for improving animal abuse issues were proposed.

이 연구는 동물학대 관련 언론보도기사를 토픽모델링을 통해 분석하여 국내 동물학대 문제에 대한 기초 자료를 제공하고, 동물학대 예방과 관리를 위한 정책적 제안을 도출하는 것을 목표로 하였다. 분석 자료는 BIG KINDS에서 제공하는 2014년부터 2024년 6월까지의 동물학대 관련 언론보도기사 1,390건을 분석대상으로 하였다. 잠재 디클레어 할당 방법을 이용하여 토픽모델링을 한 결과 6개의 토픽이 추출되 었다. 첫 번째 토픽은 촬영, 이방원, 방송, 사고, 처벌 등의 주요 단어로 이루어졌으며, ‘미디어 동물학대’ 로 명명하였다. 두 번째 토픽은 청원, 처벌, 영상, 유튜버, 조사 등의 주요 단어로 이루어졌으며, ‘동물학 대 처벌 요구’로 명명하였다. 세 번째 토픽은 동물원, 관리, 사육, 기준, 복지 등의 주요 단어로 이루어졌 으며, ‘동물원 동물복지 실태’로 명명하였다. 네 번째 토픽은 혐의, 사건, 선고, 징역, 재판 등의 주요 단어로 이루어졌으며, ‘동물학대 처벌 형량’으로 명명하였다. 다섯 번째 토픽은 사건, 사체, 수사, 신고, 현장 등의 주요 단어로 이루어졌으며, ‘동물학대 사건 수사’로 명명하였다. 여섯 번째 토픽은 구조, 입양, 단체, 유기, 반려동물 등의 주요 단어로 이루어졌으며, ‘동물보호단체 구조 활동’으로 명명하였다. 그리고 토픽에 대한 분석을 통해 동물학대 개선을 위한 정책방향을 제시하였다.
