A significant portion of the older population, which has increased due to the extension of life expectancy, takes various medications to treat diseases. As the number of drugs taken increases, the risk of adverse drug reactions increases, which are mostly caused by interactions between drugs. In addition, older people are more vulnerable to adverse drug reactions compared to younger people, due to various physiological changes due to aging and multiple co-morbidities. Adverse drug reactions that occur in geriatric patients can result in unexpected emergency room visits, prolong hospitalization, and in extreme cases, lead to death. In addition, individual’s health-related quality of life decreases and medical costs increase, which also increases the social cost burden. However, most adverse drug reactions can be predicted or prevented. Accordingly, the first half of this study looked at the characteristics of adverse drug reactions in the older adults, and the second half discussed preventive measures such as risk management of medications, sharing of prescription information, and role of community pharmacists and consumers.

기대수명의 연장으로 늘어난 고령인구의 상당수는 질환을 치료하기 위해 여러 가지 약물을 복용하게 된다. 복용하는 약물의 수가 늘어날수록 약물 이상 반응 발생 위험이 증가하는데, 이는 대부분 약물 간의 상호작용으로 인한 부작용이다. 게다가 고령자의 약물 이상 반응은 젊은 시절에 비해 더 취약 한 편인데, 그 이유는 노화로 인한 다양한 생리적 변화와 동반된 다양한 만성질환 때문이다. 고령의 환자에서 발생하는 약물 이상 반응은 예상치 못한 응급실 방문을 초래하거나 입원 기간을 연장하는 데, 극단적으로는 사망으로 이어지기도 한다. 또 개인의 건강 관련 삶의 질이 저하되고 의료비용을 증가시켜 사회적 비용 부담 역시 증가시킨다. 그러나 대부분의 약물 이상 반응은 예측이나 예방이 가능하다. 이에 본 고는 전반부에서 노년기 약물 복용 관련 이상 반응의 특성을 살폈으며, 후반부에 서는 예방 방안으로 약물의 위험성 관리, 약물 처방의 공유, 그리고 지역사회 약사와 소비자 역할 차 원의 예방을 논하였다.
