Lee Bae’s “Issu de feu” (2000) is a contemporary artworks created by encasing carbonized wood. The characteristics of carbonized wood, including its vulnerability to flaking and damage, left this artwork open to harm and required conservation treatment. Before the conservation was undertaken, an interview was conducted with the a rtist to confirm the materials and techniques used in the work and to obtain consent for the conservation process. Using the information gathered from the interviews, species identification was performed, and it was found that most of the wood was from Populus spp. In addition, infrared spectroscopy was conducted to analyze surface contaminants; the presence of wood resin was identified, which aligned with the artist interview. The conservation process involved cleaning, consolidation, bonding, and restoration. Following these steps, the treatment successfully enhanced the surface stability while conserving the artwork’s aesthetic and original integrity, resulting in stable conservation. This study provides basic data for the future conservation treatment of modern and contemporary wood sculptures and carbonized building elements.

이배 작가의 “불로부터”(2000)는 탄화목을 둘러쌓아 제작한 현대미술 작품으로 탄화목의 특성상 탈락, 파손 등으로 인해 상태가 취약하여 보존처리를 진행하였다. 보존처리에 앞서 작품의 제작기법 및 사용재료 확인과 보존처리 동의를 구하기 위해 작가 인터뷰를 진행하였다. 작가 인터뷰 를 토대로 작품 제작에 쓰인 수종 확인을 위한 수종 분석 결과, 작품 대부분은 사시나무속으로 확인 되었으며, 작품 표면 오염물 성분 확인을 위한 적외선분광분석 결과, 나무 수액으로 확인되어 작가의 인터뷰 내용과 일치함을 확인하였다. 작품의 보존처리는 세척-강화처리-접합 및 복원 순으로 진행하 였으며 위 보존처리 방법을 적용한 결과 작품의 표면 안정성과 더불어 작품의 심미성, 원본성을 유지하며 안정적으로 보존처리할 수 있었다. 본 연구가 향후 근⋅현대 목조각품 및 탄화 건축부재 등의 보존처리에 기초자료로 활용되기를 기대한다.
