In Japan, where representations of the emperor have tended to be taboo since modern times, it is extremely rare for the Showa Emperor’s war responsibilities to appear in museum exhibits. In 2005, sixty years after the end of the war, two museums opened in Tokyo that are closely related to Emperor Showa but stand at opposite ends of the spectrum in the way they are remembered. The Emperor Showa Memorial Museum, which represents Emperor Showa as a pacifist and biologist who saved the people through his ‘imperial decision’ and encouraged the people through his ‘imperial tour,’ and loved peace and nature, and the Women’s War and Peace Museum (WAM), which relentlessly pursues the war responsibility of the Emperor’s state and Emperor Showa through the voices of Japanese ‘comfort women’ victims. In this article, I will introduce how museums in post-war Japan deal with Emperor Showa, focusing on the specific cases of two museums, and through the representation of Emperor Showa in museums, I will question Japan’s post-war handling and distorted perception of history, and once again ask about the Showa Emperor’s responsibility for the war.

근대 이후 천황의 표상 자체가 금기시되는 경향이 있는 일본에서 쇼와 천황의 전쟁 책임이 박물관 전시에 나타나는 경우는 극히 드물다. 전후 60년을 맞이한 2005년, 도쿄에 쇼와 천황과 밀접한관련이 있으면서도 그 기억의 방식이 대척점에 서 있는 두 개의 박물관이 개관했다. ‘성단’(聖斷)을통해 국민을 구하고 순행(巡行)으로 국민을 격려하고, 평화와 자연을 사랑한 평화주의자 와 생물학자로서 쇼와 천황을 표상하는 <쇼와천황기념관>과, 천황제 국가의 전쟁 책임과 쇼와 천황의 전쟁책임을 일본군 ‘위안부’ 피해자의 목소리를 통해 꿋꿋하게 추궁하고 있는 <여성들의 전쟁과 평화자료관(WAM)>이다. 본고에서는 전후 일본의 박물관에서 쇼와 천황을 어떻게 다루고 있는지를 이 두 박물관의 구체적인 사례를 중심으로 소개하여, 박물관에서의 ‘쇼와 천황’의 표상을 통해 일본의 전후처리 문제와왜곡된 역사 인식에 의문을 제기하고, 쇼와 천황의 전쟁 책임을 다시금 묻고자 한다.

近代以降、天皇の表象そのものがタブー視される傾向にある日本において、昭和天皇の戦争責任が博物館の展示に現れることは極めて稀である。戦後60年を迎えた2005年、東京に昭和天皇と密接な関わりを持ちながらも、その記憶のあり方が対極に立つ二つの博物館が開館した。「聖断」で国民を救い、巡行で国民を励まし、平和と自然を愛した平和主義者・生物学者として昭和天皇を表象する「昭和天皇記念館」と、天皇制国家の戦争責任と昭和天皇の戦争責任を、日本軍「慰安婦」被害者の声を通して粘り強く追及している「女たちの戦争と平和資料館（wam)」である。 本稿では、戦後日本の博物館で昭和天皇をどのように扱っているかを、上記の二つの博物館の具体的な事例を中心に紹介し、博物館における「昭和天皇」の表象を通じて、日本の戦後処理問題と歪んだ歴史認識に疑問を投げかけ、昭和天皇の戦争責任を改めて問い直したい。
