This study is a comprehensive study examining the formation of the music in terms of musical phrase, rhythm, and melody. The process of forming the music revealed in this study is as follows. First, the musical phrase of was formed by repeating the entire ‘daeyeop(大 葉)’ of once more and separating long musical phrases into independent musical phrases. Second, the rhythmic pattern of was created by changing the four-line cycled rhythmic pattern of into a form close to a one-line cycled rhythmic pattern. Third, the melodies of Chapters 1 and 2 of were created by borrowing the melodies used in hyangak pieces such as , , and , and the melodies of Chapters 3 to 5 of were created by borrowing the melody of . Through this study, it was clearly revealed that was a music that was most influenced by , but that it was created by borrowing melodies from hyangak pieces, including , which was derived from , because the length of the sub-phras(2 lines) in the first half of the ‘daeyeop’ of did not correspond to the length of the small phrase(1 line) of .

본고는 <만대엽> 악곡의 성립 과정을 악구, 장단, 선율의 면에서 총체적으로 고찰한 연구이다. 본 연구에서 밝혀진 <만대엽> 악곡의 성립 과정은 다음과 같다. 첫째, <만대엽>의 악구는 <진작3>의 ‘대엽’ 전반을 한 번 더 반복하고, 길이가 긴 악구를 독립된 악구로 분리시켜 형성되었다. 둘째, <만대엽>의 장단은 <진작3>의 4행 주기 장단형을 1행 주기 장단형에 가까운 형태로 변화시켜 성립되었다. 셋째, <만대 엽> 제1~2장 선율은 <감군은> <한림별곡> <귀호곡> 등의 향악곡에 사용된 선율을, <만대엽> 제3~5장 선율은 <진작3>의 선율을 차용하여 성립되었다. 본 연구를 통해 <만대엽>은 <진작3>의 영향을 가장 많이 받아서 성립된 악곡이지만, <진작3> ‘대엽’ 전반부의 소악구 길이(2행)가 <만대엽>의 소악구 길이(1행)와 상응하지 않았기 때문에 <진작4>에서 파생 된 <한림별곡>을 비롯한 향악곡의 선율을 차용하여 성립되었다는 것이 명확하게 밝혀졌다.
