I think it would not be useless to assess the international status of Korean musicology today from the perspective of ethnomusicology for the sake of future Korean musicology that will contribute to the world musicology. The international status of Korean musicology went through a period of opening by Lee Hye-Ku. Although it was a period of opening, he secured the international status of Korean musicology in one breath through academic and personal exchanges with many great scholars who led the world of ethnomusicology. This is proven by the fact that the Grove Dictionary of Music, after the 5th edition, and the German Dictionary of Music included entries related to Korean music under his leadership, the successful holding of the 26th World Conference of International Council for Folk Music (IFMC) in Seoul, and the participation of many world-class ethnomusicologists in various articles for his Papers. In addition, the inclusion of Korean music entries in the Harvard Dictionary of Music in the early 1980s is also considered to be an example of an increase in the international status of Korean musicology. The efforts of Kwon Oh-Sung, who actively participated as one of the founding members of the Asia-Pacific Society for Ethnomusicology (APSE), the fact that a Korean scholar actively participated for the establishment of Musics of East Asia (MEA), a study group of the International Council for Traditional Music and Dance (ICTMD), and the efforts of Korean scholar who led it thereafter were factors that helped to elevate the status of Korea and Korean musicology in Asia. However, the fact that there were few papers presented by Korean scholars at the academic conferences of these two societies requires much reflection. The successful hosting of the 26th IFMC World Conference in Seoul in 1981 greatly contributed to securing the international status of Korean musicology. However, considering the very low participation of Korean scholars in the World conferences by ICTMD held subsequently, the fact that there are very few Korean scholars and ethnomusicologists, majoring in Korean music, working at universities in the US and UK, which are leading the world's ethnomusicology education, and the fact that there are very few ethnomusicologists specializing in Korean music, and the fact that the results of Korean musicological research have not caught the eye of a renowned ethnomusicologist who has captured the global trend of ethnomusicology, it can be said that the international status of Korean musicology today is in its initial stage of regression compared to before. For this reason, the future of Korean musicology, which aims to secure an international status, is bound to be a rough road.

세계 음악학에 공헌할 미래의 한국음악학을 위해 오늘날 한국음악학의 국제적 위상을 민족음악학적 입장에서 가늠해 봄이 무익하지는 않으리라 생각한다. 한국음악학의 국제적 위상은 이혜구에 의해 개문(開 門)의 시기를 거쳤다. 비록 개문의 시기였지만, 이혜구는 세계 민족음악학계를 이끈 여러 거장 학자와의 학문적, 인간적 교유를 통해 단숨에 한국음악학의 국제적 위상을 확보하였다. 그의 주도로 제5판 이후의 그로브 음악사전과 독일 음악사전이 한국음악 관련 항목을 담은 일, 제26회 세계민속음악학회의 성공 적 서울 개최, 그를 위한 여러 논문집에 여러 세계적 민족음악학자가 참여한 일이 이를 증명한다. 이외 1980년대 초 하버드 음악사전이 한국음악 항목을 담은 일도 한국음악학의 국제적 위상을 높인 사례의 하나라고 본다. 아시아 태평양 민족음악학회 창립 회원국의 하나로 활발한 활동을 전개한 권오성의 노력, 국제전통음 악무용학회(ICTMD)의 연구모임 동아시아음악연구회 창립과 이후 이를 이끌어간 한국인 학자의 노력은 아시아에서의 한국과 한국음악학의 위상 제고에 도움을 준 요인이었다. 그러나 이 두 학회의 학술대회에서 한국학자의 논문 발표가 적은 사실은 많은 반성을 요구한다. 1981년 서울에서의 제26회 국제민속음악학회 (IFMC) 세계대회 성공적 개최는 한국음악학의 국제적 위상 확보에 크게 공헌하였다. 그러나 이후 개최된 국제전통음악무용학회(ICTMD) 세계대회에의 아주 저조한 한국인 학자의 참여와 세계 민족음악학 교육을 주도하고 있는 미국과 영국의 대학에서 활약하는 한국인 학자와 한국음악 전공 민족음악학 학자가 아주 적은 사실, 그리고 민족음악학의 세계적 흐름을 담은 저명 민족음악학자의 눈에 들어오지 않은 한국음악학 연구 결과라는 사실 등에 의하면 오늘날 한국음악학의 국제적 위상은 이전보다 후퇴한 초입 단계라 할 수 있다. 이와 같은 이유로 국제적 위상을 확보하려는 한국음악학의 미래는 위험한 길이 될 수밖에 없다.
