This study aims to qualitatively analyze young children's responses to multicultural picture books from their perspective, providing a foundation for the direction of multicultural education in early childhood. Multicultural education focuses on helping young children understand diverse cultural backgrounds, develop attitudes of equality and anti-bias, and recognize social diversity. The researcher selected three multicultural picture books and read them with the children over a two-week period, from August 20 to September 3, 2024. The children's reactions were recorded through audio and video, and field notes were taken. The main focus of the study was to analyze the impact of illustrations and color elements in the picture books on children's awareness of multiculturalism. The collected data were categorized into themes such as "experience stories," "self-identification," "discovering paratext," "expressing interest and engagement," "recognizing prejudice and multicultural elements," and "attitudes toward multicultural awareness." The study also examined how the visual elements of the picture books contributed to shaping attitudes of equality and anti-bias in the children. This research is expected to serve as a foundational resource for the development of multicultural education in early childhood, helping children cultivate the ability to understand and respect diverse social and cultural contexts.

본 연구는 유아의 관점에서 다문화 그림책에 대한 반응을 질적으로 분석하여 유아 다문화 교육의 방향을 제시하는 것을 목표로 한다. 다문화 교육은 유아가 다양한 문화적 배경을 이해하고, 평등성과 반편견을 형성 하며, 사회적 다양성을 인정하는 태도를 개발하는 데 중점을 둔다. 연구자는 2024년 8월 20일부터 9월 3일 까지 약 2주간 다문화 그림책 3권을 선정하여 유아들 과 함께 읽고, 유아들의 반응을 녹음, 녹화, 현장 노트 를 통해 기록하였다. 연구의 주요 초점은 그림책 속 일러스트레이션과 색 깔 요소가 유아들의 다문화 인식에 미치는 영향을 분석 하는데 있었다. 수집된 자료는 ‘경험 이야기’, ‘자기 동일시’, ‘파라텍스트 발견하기’, ‘흥미 및 적극성 표현 하기’, ‘편견 및 다문화 요소 발견하기’, ‘다문화 인식에 대한 마음가짐’ 등으로 범주화하여 유아들의 반응을 분 석했다. 또한, 그림책의 시각적 요소가 유아들에게 평 등성과 반편견의 태도를 형성하는 데 어떤 역할을 하는 지 살펴보았다. 이 연구는 유아 다문화 교육의 발전에 기초 자료로 활용될 수 있으며, 유아들이 다양한 사회적, 문화적 맥락을 이해하고 존중하는 능력을 키우는 데 기여할 것으로 기대된다.
