This study aims to analyzed the academic withdrawal intentions (leave of absence and dropout) of STEM students at University A, located in Gyeongbuk, based on Tinto’s theory. To this end, we used the National Assay Survey on Teaching and Learning (NASEL) data from the Korea Educational Development Institute from 2021 to 2023, set the intention to drop out as a dependent variable, and performed a logistic regression analysis. The analysis included personal characteristics, Institutional immersion, and academic and social integration variables to predict the intention to drop out. The intention to take a leave of absence was higher for female students than for male students, and grades, grades, and self-assessment scores of basic learning ability were identified as major negative predictors. For the intention to drop out, grades, Institutional commitment, and self-assessment scores of basic learning ability were identified as major negative predictors, but social integration did not have a significant effect. The significance of this study lies in the fact that it confirms the predictive power of various variables that explain the intention to take a leave of absence and drop out based on the adaptation and experience of college life of science and engineering students.

본 연구는 Tinto 이론을 기반으로 경북 소재 A대학 이공계 대학생들의 학업중단 의도(휴학, 자퇴)를 분석하 였다. 이를 위해 2021년부터 2023년까지 한국교육개발원의‘교수학습과정 설문조사(NASEL)’ 데이터를 활용 하여, 학업중단 의도를 종속변인으로 설정하고 로지스틱 회귀분석을 수행하였다. 분석에는 개인적 특성, 대학 몰입, 학업적·사회적 통합 변인을 포함하여 학업중단 의도를 예측하였다. 휴학 의도는 여학생이 남학생보다 높았고, 학년과 학점 그리고 기초학습 능력 자기평가 점수가 주요한 부적 예측 변인으로 확인되었다. 자퇴 의 도에서는 학점, 대학몰입, 기초학습 능력 자기평가 점수가 주요한 부적 예측 변인으로 확인되었으나, 사회적 통합(학내 구원과의 상호작용, 학습 및 동아리·학생회활동, 학생 간 교류)은 유의한 영향을 미치지 않았다. 이 연구는 이공계 학생들의 대학생활 적응과 경험이 휴학 및 자퇴 의도에 영향을 미칠 수 있음을 고려하여, 이를 설명하는 다양한 변인들의 예측력을 확인하는 데 의의가 있다. 나아가, 학업 중단 의도에 영향을 미치는 주요 요인을 파악함으로써 이를 예방할 수 있는 구체적이고 체계적인 교수학습 전략을 설계하는 데 기여할 수 있을 것이다.
