This study highlights the introduction of drama units in the Korean language curriculum under the 2015 revirevised educational curriculum, aiming to enhance self-expression skills among upper elementary school students. Since 2019, students in the second semester of the fifth grade and both semesters of the sixth grade have been provided opportunities to improve their self-expression skills through drama units in their Korea in textbooks. This focus is significant as upper elementary students are at a critical stage where experiences with drama help them build confidence, develop communication skills with others, and express themselves more effectively. The study explores the direction and content of self-expression education within the Korean language curriculum, analyzing the contents of drama units specifically for upper elementary grades. Through this process, the study examines the content and goals of "drama education" implemented in elementary schools, aiming to assess the current status of self-expression skill development within the framework of the Korean language curriculum. The findings reveal that the Korean language curriculum broadly addresses self-expression education across the areas of listening, speaking, reading, writing, grammar, and literature, and that self-expression education is being strengthened particularly through drama units.

본 연구는 2015 개정 교육과정에서 초등학교 국어 교과의 자기표현력 향상을 위한 연극단원의 신설에 주 목하였다. 이를 통해 2019년부터 초등학교 고학년인 5학년 2학기, 6학년 1학기, 2학기 국어 교과서에 개설된 연극단원을 통해 학생들은 자기표현력 향상이 이루어지는 기회를 갖게 되었다. 초등 고학년 시기의 학생들 은 연극 경험을 통해 자신감을 키우고, 타인과의 소통 능력을 발전시키며 더욱 풍부한 자기표현을 할 수 있 도록 돕는 중요한 단계를 통과하고 있기 때문이다. 이에 본 연구는 국어 교과에서 자기표현력 교육의 방향 성과 내용을 탐구하고, 고학년을 중심으로 연극단원에서 다루고 있는 교과 내용을 분석하였다. 이러한 과정 을 통해 초등학교에서 진행되고 있는 ‘연극교육’의 내용과 목표를 확인하고 국어 교과의 틀 안에서 진행 되는 연극단원에 담겨있는 자기표현력 향상의 현재를 가늠해보고자 하였다. 그 결과 국어 교과는 듣기·말 하기·읽기·쓰기·문법·문학 영역에서 자기표현 교육을 전반적으로 다루고 있으며 연극단원에서 자기표 현교육이 강화되고 있음을 확인하였다.
