This study compares lying strategies used in refusal situations between Korean and Japanese speakers to understand linguistic and cultural differences and help language learners develop effective communication strategies. The research involved 100 native Korean speakers (KNS) and 100 native Japanese speakers (JNS) using a Discourse Completion Test (DCT) to examine differences in lying strategies. KNS tended to prefer the ‘positive lying strategy’ to create a positive impression, while JNS favored the ‘conditional lying strategy’ to lower expectations. The study also found that the preference for lying strategies varied based on social distance and context, reflecting cultural characteristics of each country. This research highlights the need for intercultural communication strategies in Korean and Japanese language education and their potential as practical language learning resources.

본 연구는 한국어와 일본어 화자가 거절 상황에서 사용하는 거짓말 전략을 비교하여 언어 적·문화적 차이를 이해하고, 언어 학습자가 효과적인 의사소통 전략을 개발할 수 있도록 돕 고자 한다. 연구는 100명의 한국어 원어민(KNS)과 100명의 일본어 원어민(JNS)을 대상으로 담화 완성 테스트(DCT)를 사용하여 거짓말 전략의 차이를 조사했다. KNS는 긍정적인 인상 을 주기 위해 ‘긍정적 거짓말 전략’을 선호하는 경향이 있는 반면, JNS는 기대치를 낮추기 위 해 ‘조건부 거짓말 전략’을 선호했다. 또한 본 연구에서는 거짓말 전략의 선호가 사회적 거리 와 맥락에 따라 달라지며, 각 나라의 문화적 특성을 반영한다는 것을 발견했다. 본 연구는 한 국어 및 일본어 교육에서의 문화 간 의사소통 전략의 필요성을 주장하였고 이를 실질적인 언 어 학습 자료로 활용할 수 있는 자료를 제공하였다는 점에 의의가 있다고 할 수 있다.
