This paper examines a brief history of scholarship of royal sacrificial ritual music of Korea by looking at academic articles published in Korean journals, and discusses the development and expansion shown within its methodology and topics. The significance and trend of the research are summarized as follow. First, early outcome is introductory description mostly on Jongmyojeryeak, and then progressed to the analysis of its music, lyrics, and dance on the basis of printed historical materials. Second, during and after the 2000s specialist scholars vary the topics and examined the ritual music in detail. Academic writings are published in English for foreign scholars. Research method moves to the analysis of recorded materials and actual performance. Third, recent research deals with changes in its value and identity as a contemporary cultural artifact, and shows discourses on its survival in modern society. Scholars focuses on how the music is utilized and applied in public sectors or popular events, such as school education, learning tool development, public concert, and local festivals, and thus reflects researchers’ field experience and their different perspectives. Comparative research with other countries’ examine compatible ideas of universality as Asian or Royal class culture and as unique Korea’s own heritage. However, more intensified discussion on music and reference of foreign(local) scholars are required for future research. By approaching performance of modern artists, discourse on various creative ritual performance should be examined.

본 연구는 국가제례악 연구의 전개와 흐름을 국내 국악학 학술논문의 주제 다양화 및 연구방법 확장을 중심으로 살핀다. 제례악 연구의 성장과 최근 동향은 다음과 같이 요약된다. 첫째, 초기 연구 는 국가문화재로의 종묘제례악 예술성과 역사적 가치 소개이며, 점차 문헌, 사료, 음원 분석을 통한 악ㆍ가ㆍ무별, 시대별 특징과 이론을 규명하는 연구로 발전한다. 둘째, 2010년대 이후 제례악의 문 화 상징성과 가치 논의, 인터아시아적 비교 연구가 크게 증가하며 방법론적ㆍ학제적 관점변화가 나 타난다. 왕조 제례라는 보편성과 한국적 특수성이라는 양립된 관점의 논의는 한국제례악 특성 규명 이 가능한 이론을 제시한다. 셋째, 최근 연구는 문화콘텐츠로의 제례악이 현대사회에서 공존하는 방식과 담론을 담는다. 교수학습 도구개발, 무대공연, 유교축제콘텐츠 연구는 현장 경험 및 관련자 시각을 반영하며 연구의 방법과 전형 전환을 보여준다. 향후 제례악 연구는 음악 논의 중심의 학제 융합적 접근 및 글로벌ㆍ인터아시아적 논의를 위한 현지 전문가 견해 반영 등이 필요하다. 다양한 맥락의 제례악 연행과 창작의 담론 연구를 위해서 여 러 예술가의 최근 활동에 대한 참여관찰이 요구된다.
