In the context of the global formation of economic blocs, Free Trade Agreements (FTAs) play a crucial role in the international business of firms. This study aims to delve deeper into the mixed results observed in previous research on the impact of FTAs on firms' foreign direct investment (FDI) by examining the influence of the multidimensional institutional environment of the host countries. Focusing on ASEAN, a region of growing importance for both the global economy and Korean firms, this study investigates how the multiple institutional environments affect the relationship between FTA and Korean firms' FDI. To achieve this research objective, panel data for 23 years (1996-2018) were collected for the 10 ASEAN countries, with 2009 as the base year when the Korea-ASEAN FTA signed an additional investment agreement. Four hypotheses were tested, examining the direct impact of the Korea-ASEAN FTA on Korean firms' FDI and the moderating effects of ASEAN's political stability, regulatory quality, and control of corruption. The analysis results indicate that the Korea-ASEAN FTA has a significant positive impact on Korean firms' FDI. Additionally, ASEAN's political stability and control of corruption positively moderate this relationship. However, the regulatory quality of ASEAN did not show a significant moderating effect on the relationship between the Korea-ASEAN FTA and Korean firms' FDI. The findings suggest that to better understand the relationship between FTAs and FDI, it is essential to consider the country-level environment of the host countries, particularly the institutional environment. The study provides theoretical implications for understanding the FTA-FDI relationship and practical implications for Korean firms considering their strategic investment decisions in the ASEAN region, emphasizing the need to pay attention to political stability and control of corruption to ensure the effective and stable implementation of FTAs.

세계적으로 경제적 블록이 형성되는 흐름에서 FTA가 기업의 국제경영활동에 중요한 역할을 수행하는 가운데, 본 연구는 FTA가 기 업의 해외직접투자 미치는 영향력을 조명한 기존 연구에서 나타나는 혼재된 연구결과를 보다 심도있게 조명하기 위해 진출국의 다차 원적 제도적 환경이 미치는 영향력을 함께 살펴보았다. 이를 위하여 세계경제는 물론 한국기업의 입장에서 중요한 지역으로 부상하고 있는 ASEAN을 조명하면서, 제도적 환경의 다양성이 존재하는 환경에서 FTA가 한국기업의 해외직접투자를 얼마나 촉진시킬 수 있는 지 살펴보려는데 목적을 두었다. 연구목적을 달성하기 위하여 한국-ASEAN FTA가 추가적으로 투자 협정문을 체결한 2009년을 기준으로 ASEAN 10개국에 대해 1996년부터 2018년까지 23개년의 국가별, 연도별 패널 데이터를 수집하였으며 한-ASEAN FTA가 한국기업의 해외직접투자에 미치 는 직접적인 영향력과 함께 ASEAN의 정치적 안정성, 규제의 질, 부패통제 환경이 미치는 조절효과를 포함한 4개의 가설을 검증하였 다. 분석 결과 한-ASEAN FTA는 한국기업의 해외직접투자에 유의한 정(+)의 영향을 미쳤으며, ASEAN의 정치적 안정성과 부패통제 는 해당 관계를 긍정적으로 조절하는 것으로 나타났다. 그러나 ASEAN 규제의 질 수준은 한-ASEAN FTA와 한국기업의 해외직접투자 관계에 미치는 유의한 영향력을 살펴볼 수 없었다. 분석 결과는 FTA와 해외직접투자 관계를 보다 명확하게 파악하기 위해서는 진출국의 국가차원의 환경, 특히 제도적 환경을 살펴봐 야 한다는 이론적 시사점과, 한국의 중요한 경제적 파트너 지역으로 부상한 ASEAN 지역에 대해 한국기업이 투자의사결정을 고려할 때에는 FTA 협정이 효율적이고 안정적으로 실행될 수 있는 정치적 안정성과 부패통제 환경을 특히 살펴볼 필요가 있다는 실무적 시 사점을 제공한다.
