The structure of the Later Baekje royal palace included a living quarters, a main hall, and a palace. The main hall, where the king conducted official affairs, and the bedchamber, where he rested, were separated. It was an isolated space with a door and a fence in between. It is highly likely that the royal palace of Later Baekje was located on a hill outside the eastern part of the square block, not in the space where Jeonju Castle is currently located around Jeonju Stream. The royal palace's rear mountain fortress was Donggoseong Fortress to the south, which functioned as a defense and logistics warehouse. The royal palace of Later Baekje utilized the square block in Wansanju, Silla, as a government office or urban area. Later Baekje developed swales by blocking the flooding of the Jeonju Stream, expanded the blockade, and built the royal palace on a hill. The royal palace of Later Baekje was influenced by the royal palace of Silla and the royal palace of Owol in China and formed its own unique palace structure and location.

이 글은 후백제 왕궁의 실체에 접근하기 위하여 그 입지와 구조, 건축을 중심으로 왕궁의 조영 특성을 검토하였다. 문헌 사료를 기초로 하여 지적도 및 항공사진, 고고학 조사 성과를 분석하는 방식을 사용하였다. 후백제 왕궁은 『삼국유사』 후백제 견훤조에 잘 보이는데, 침전, 정전(宮), 궁정 (宮庭) 등이 있었다. 국왕이 정사를 보는 정전과 휴식이나 잠을 자는 침전이 구분 되어 있었으며, 문과 담장을 사이에 두고 격리된 공간이었다. 후백제 왕궁은 현재 전주천 주변의 전주부성이 있었던 공간이 아니라 방격 구획의 동쪽 바깥의 구릉지 에 있었을 가능성이 높다. 왕궁의 배후산성으로는 남쪽의 동고산성이 있어서 방어 및 물류 창고로 기능하였다. 후백제 왕궁은 신라 완산주의 주치에 있었던 방격 구획을 관청이나 시가지로 활 용하였다. 후백제는 전주천의 범람을 막아 저습지를 개발하면서 방격 구획을 확장하고 구릉지에 왕궁을 조성하였다. 후백제 왕궁은 신라 왕궁, 중국 오월의 왕궁에 서 영향을 받아 독자적인 왕궁의 구조와 입지를 구성하였다.
