This study aims to explore the factors contributing to the managerial decline of indoor sports facilities, identify the causes of business failures, and propose improvement strategies. By analyzing the elements that may lead to operational deterioration, this study seeks to encourage prudent market entry, prevent crises, and offer strategies for business stabilization during challenging periods, as well as effective plans for market exit when necessary. To achieve these objectives, structured and unstructured in-depth interviews were conducted with business owners who have over three years of experience managing gyms. These interviews took place in October 2024. The collected data were analyzed, and consultations with experts in sports facility management were held to validate the research methods and findings. The results of the analysis are as follows: First, the high density of competing facilities and services within local markets intensifies price competition. Second, economy downturns, recessions, and pandemic-related anxiety have led to reduced consumer spending on leisure and health, significantly decreasing revenue for these businesses. Third, regular maintenance and continuous upkeep are critical; neglecting these needs often leads to increased membership attrition and deteriorating business conditions. Fourth, overly optimistic assumptions, such as "things will work out," frequently result in insufficient contingency planning for unforeseen challenges. Lastly, a lack of managerial expertise in areas such as labor management, tax compliance, and legal obligations also contributes to the decline of these businesses. Based on these qualitative findings, this study provides valuable insights into the factors driving the deterioration of indoor sports facility management. These findings serve as a foundation for predicting potential risks and minimizing damage during the market entry, operational, and exit phases of the indoor sports facility industry.

본 연구는 실내스포츠 시설업의 경영악화 요인을 탐색하여 경영 실패의 원인을 파악하고, 이를 개선하는 방안을 제시하고자 한다. 스포츠시설 경영과정에서 발생할 수 있는 경영악화 요인을 분석하여 시장에서의 신중한 진입과 위기 상황을 사전에 방지하고, 위기 시 경영정상화 방안 그리고 시장에서의 원만한 퇴출 방안을 모색하고자 한다. 이러한 이 연구의 목적을 달성하기 위해 2024년 10월 한 달간 최근 3년 이상 헬스장 경영 경험이 있는 사업자를 대상으로 구조 및 비구조적 심층 면담을 통한 인터뷰를 진행하여 자료를 수집하고 분석하였다. 수집한 자료를 주제 영역별로 분석한 결과를 도출하고 그 과정에서 스포츠시설 전문가에게 자문 형식의 회의를 진행하여 연구 방법과 결과의 타당성을 확보하였다. 이러한 과정을 거쳐 나타난 결과는 다음과 같다. 스포츠 시설업의 경영악화 요인으로는 첫째, 스포츠시설이 위치한 지역 내의 경쟁업체, 경쟁상품의 포화상태로 인하여 가격 출혈 경쟁이 발생한다. 둘째, 경기침체, 경제 불황, 감염병의 유행으로 인한 소비 위축 심리는 해당 업체의 매출 감소 요인으로 작용한다. 셋째, 스포츠시설을 이용하는 소비자에게 시설 내부의 보수관리, 유지관리를 소홀히 한다면 회원 이탈률이 증가한다. 넷째, 스포츠시설을 운영하면서‘잘될 거야’라는 막연한 기대심리는 실제 현장에서 전혀 예상치 못한 상황에 대한 대응 부재로 이어진다. 다섯째, 스포츠시설 경영에 대한 노무관 리, 세무관리, 법률적 지식 등 경영 지식의 미비는 경영악화의 요인이 된다. 이상과 같은 질적 연구를 바탕으로 실내 스포츠 시설 경영악화 요인 탐색은 실내스포츠 시설업의 시장 진출과 운영 그리고 퇴출 과정에서 발생하는 리스크를 예측하고 피해를 최소화할 수 있는 대응 방안의 기초자료로서 가치가 있다고 판단한다.
