This study examines the characteristics of “Shenguai (神怪),” a dream book published by Chen-shiyuan (陳士元) in the Ming Dynasty, Mengzhanyizhi(夢占逸旨). The chapter titled “Shenguai” is a collection of dream cases in which gods/deities directly visit someone’s dreams. These dreams are characterized by the fact that they do not use metaphors or symbols and do not require an expert dream interpreter. This study describes this in terms of the “directness” of dreams, which is the most characteristic feature of “Shenguai” dream narratives. There are three characteristics of the dream narratives in “Shenguai.” The first is the reality of gods/deities. According to Chen-Shiyuan, the gods and deities appearing in dreams are real. Chen-shiyuan claims that they are recorded in ancient and reliable texts as Kuigui (睽鬼), Baishen (百神), Liuzong (六宗), Wusi (五祀), and so on, emphasizing that they are not imaginary. Second, dreams in which gods/deities appear and deliver messages are often future-oriented. These dreams are characterized as “planned (定)” and difficult to change. “Unplanned (定)” dreams were associated with themes, such as birth, rebirth, and death. Chen-shiyuan elaborates on the concept of reincarnation and emphasizes that reincarnation is not fiction through various specific historical examples. Third, the most distinctive feature of the dream narratives compiled in “Shenguai” of Mengzhanyizhi is the “directness of the dream.” Since gods appear and act directly or give clear messages, most dreams do not contain many metaphors or symbolism. Chen-shiyuan describes these dreams as “omens that cannot be hidden.” This fact explains why there are relatively few references in the section “Shenguai” to asking for an expert to interpret dreams. The directness of dreams is also evident through the “words (言)” and “writing (文)” of gods/deities, who make their messages clear by speaking or writing directly. In this study, through the analysis of the “Shenguai” dream narrative, I showed that contrary to the common perception that dreams are a world of rich metaphors and symbols, dreams in which gods/deities appear directly convey messages in very direct ways. Gods/deities make their voices heard clearly in the dream space. Although dreams are still a controversial area and there are many divergent lines of research on dream space, dreams still have meaning in the lives of individuals, and the study of dreams enriches the meaning of life.

이 연구는 명(明)나라의 진사원(陳士元)이 펴낸 꿈 전문서인 몽점일지(夢占逸 旨) ｢신괴편(神怪篇)｣의 분석을 통해, 고대 중국의 꿈의 특징을 탐색하는 것을 목 적으로 한다. ｢신괴편｣은 신(神)이나 죽은 사람이 변한 신적(神的) 존재들이 직접 누군가의 꿈을 방문하는 꿈 사례를 모은 것이다. ｢신괴편｣에 실린 꿈 사례는 은유 나 상징을 경유하지 않으며, 꿈 해석 전문가가 없어도 몽자(夢者)가 이해할 수 있 는 꿈으로 이루어져 있다. 이 연구에서는 이를 꿈의 ‘직접성’이라는 용어로 설명하 였는데, 이는 ｢신괴편｣ 꿈 서사의 가장 큰 특징이다. ｢신괴편｣의 꿈 서사가 가지는 특징은 세 가지로 정리할 수 있다. 첫째, 신/신적 존재의 실재성이다. 진사원은 이들이 고대의 믿을 만한 문헌 속에서, 신/신적 존재 가 규귀(睽鬼), 백신(百神), 육종(六宗), 오사(五祀) 등으로 기록되었다고 밝히면서, 이들이 허구적 존재가 아님을 강조하였다. 둘째, 신/신적 존재가 나타나 메시지를 전해주는 꿈은 대부분 미래로 향하는 방향성을 갖고 있다. 이러한 꿈은 ‘정해져 있 으며, 바뀌기 어려운’ 특징을 가진다. ‘정해진(定)’ 꿈은 탄생과 죽음 등의 주제와 연관되어 뚜렷하게 나타나며, 구체적인 형태로 제시된다. 셋째, 몽점일지 ｢신괴 편｣의 꿈이 가지는 가장 큰 특징은 ‘꿈의 직접성’이다. ｢신괴편｣의 꿈 사례는 신이 직접 등장하여 행동하거나 분명하게 메시지를 전하기 때문에 은유나 상징성이 잘 드러나지 않고, 별도의 점몽(占夢)을 필요로 하지 않는 꿈이 대부분이다. 진사원은 ‘징조가 있으며 숨길 수 없는’ 꿈이라고 설명했는데, 이는 ｢신괴편｣에 꿈 해석 전문 가를 청하는 내용이 상대적으로 적은 이유와 맥락이 닿는다. 꿈의 직접성은 신/신 적 존재들의 ‘말(言)’과 ‘글(文)’을 통해 뚜렷하게 드러나는데, 그들은 직접 말하거 나 글자를 전달함으로써 메시지를 분명하게 전달한다. 이 연구에서는 ｢신괴편｣ 꿈 사례 분석을 통해 꿈은 풍부한 은유와 상징으로 이 루어진 것이라는 일반적인 꿈의 문법과 달리, 신/신적 존재들이 직접 등장하는 꿈 은 매우 직접적인 형태로 메시지를 전한다는 점을 밝히고자 하였다. 신과 신적 존 재들은 꿈의 공간을 통해 그들의 목소리를 분명하게 전달한다. 꿈은 여전히 논쟁 적인 영역이고, 꿈 해석에 대한 갈래도 많지만 꿈은 여전히 개인의 삶에서 의미를 가지며, 꿈에 대한 연구는 그 의미를 더욱 풍부하게 만든다.
