This study investigated factors related to academic adjustment and dropout among international undergraduate students, focusing on personality traits, social relationships, university satisfaction, and perception-related variables. The results of a multiple regression analysis indicated that participation in ‘Korean language classes’ and ‘depressive tendencies’ influenced academic adjustment. Logistic regression analysis on academic dropout revealed a positive relationship with ‘local Koreans’.These findings highlight the complexity of international student dropout, which cannot be attributed solely to academic performance or personal and emotional factors. Furthermore, the study suggests that building a network of diverse community members can act as social support for international students, helping them navigate various challenges and potentially avert the risk of dropout.

이 연구의 목적은 학부 과정 외국인 유학생의 학업적응정도와 학업중 단의도의 관련 변인을 ‘성격적 요인, 사회적 관계, 대학 만족도, 인식 요인’을 중심으로 탐색하는 데 있다. 학업적응정도의 다중회귀 분석 결과, ‘한국어 수업’과 ‘우울 성향’이 학업적응정도에 영향을 미쳤다. 학업중단의도의 로지스틱 회귀 분석 결과, ‘지역 내 한국인’은 양의 관 계를, ‘지역 내 동향인’은 음의 관계로 나타났다. 한편, 학업적응정도 와 학업중단의도의 상관관계를 분석한 결과, 두 종속 변인 간에는 통 계적으로 유의미한 결과가 나타나지 않았다. 이와 같은 연구 결과는 외국인 유학생의 중도탈락은 단순히 학업적인 성취 능력이나 개인의 정서적 특성만으로 귀결되지 않는 복합적인 개념임을 상기시킨다. 동 시에 지역 사회 내 모어 화자와의 네트워크는 대학에서 다양한 실패를 경험한 외국인 유학생이 중도탈락 위기를 극복할 수 있게 하는 일종의 사회적 지지대와 같은 역할을 할 수 있음을 시사한다.
