This study explores contemporary discussions of the existence of plants, focusing on their virtual images as they appear in some contemporary media art practices. It first examines the early visual technologies of Fox Talbot and Arthur C. Pillsbury, showing how these images reveal a distinctly modern understanding of plants; however, as Burke's writing illustrates, human perspectives on plants have often reflected mere cultural projections. Today, there is a increasing critical awareness of such anthropocentrism. As an example of this turn, this paper introduces Michael Marder's thoughts on plants, which reframe philosophical concepts traditionally reserved for humans to broadly correspond to the life of non-human plants. This study emphasizes a fundamental shift in our approach to plant beings - one that respects their ambiguity and acknowledges that our understanding of them is inherently limited and perhaps even unattainable. This approach helps us to recognize that our frameworks for understanding plants are virtual, appearing differently over time. In parallel, this study also considers three media art practices by Go-Eun Im, Ellie Kyungran Heo and Kim Uljiro that offer post-anthropocentric ways of looking at plants. Their images of plants invite the viewer into the unknown dimensions of plant life.
