This paper is a study on Mrs. Park, the wife of Su-un(水雲) Daesinsa(大神師). Around the 200th anniversary of Su-un’s birth, research on Mrs. Park seems to be rather insignificant compared to research on Su-un. On this context, this paper attempts to shed light on Mrs. Park’s life based on these issues. Although the lack of information on Mrs. Park was a major obstacle to this study, several previous studies have served as excellent guides for writing this paper. In my opinion, if there is no in-depth research on Mrs. Park, it would be difficult to say that Su-un’s life has been fully illuminated. Therefore, in order to fully understand Su-un’s life and thoughts, a more detailed study on Mrs. Park seems to be necessary. In addition, the necessity of such research is that Mrs. Park’s difficult life will provide an important clue to the reality of early female Donghak followers who lived in that era. Based on this premise, this paper proceeds through the following process. First, as a biographical understanding of Mrs. Park, her life can be explained into three periods. 1) Ages 17-29 (1842-1854) 2) Ages 29-39 (1854-1864) 3) Ages 39-49 (1864-1874) Second, we discuss the meaning of Mrs. Park, the person within the relation between her life and faith. Here, we assume her life as a conceptual framework of ‘devotion’. Under this concept we divide it into three categories such as family, husband, and Donghak, and then discuss its meaning. In the conclusion, we look back on Mrs. Park’s life and diagnose the future prospects for research on her that can be expanded and deepened in various fields, such as history, sociology, or women’s studies, as well as Donghak and Cheondogyo.

본 논문은 수운 대신사 부인 박씨에 대한 연구이다. 수운 탄생 200주년에 즈음하여 수운에 대한 연구에 비해 박씨 부인에 대한 연구는 여전히 미미해 보인다. 본 논문은 이러한 문제점을 전제로, 박씨 부인의 삶에 대해 집중적으로 조명을 시도해본다. 물론 박씨 부인에 대한 빈약한 자료는 본 연구에 큰 장애이었지만, 지금까지의 몇 편의 연구들이 본 논문을 서술하는데 훌륭한 길라잡이가 되어주었다. 필자가 생각해 보건데, 박씨 부인에 대한 심도 있는 연구가 부재한다면 수운의 삶을 온전히 조명했다고 말할 수 없을 것이다. 그러므로 수운의 삶과 사상을 온전히 이해하기 위해서라도 박씨 부인에 대한 조금 더 정치한 연구가 필요해 보인다. 더불어 이러한 연구에의 필요성은 박씨 부인의 고난에 찬 삶이 무엇보다 먼저 동학도로서 그 시대를 살아간 초기 여성 동덕의 실태를 엿볼 수 있는 중요한 실마리가 될 것으로 사료된다. 이런 전제를 바탕으로 하여 본 논문은 다음과 같은 과정을 통해 진행된다. 첫째, 박씨 부인에 대한 전기사적 이해로서 부인의 삶을 세 시기로 나누어 설명한다. 1) 17세~29세 (1842년~1854년) 2) 29세~39세 (1854년~1864년) 3) 39세~49세 (1864년~1874년) 둘째, 박씨 부인의 삶과 신앙을 연계하여 그 의미를 논의해본다. 여기서는 부인의 일생을 ‘헌신’이라는 개념 틀로 상정하고 가족, 남편, 동학의 세 범주로 나누어 그 의미를 논의한다. 결론 부분에서는 박씨 부인의 삶을 돌아보면서, 동학·천도교뿐만 다양한 연구 영역 즉, 역사학, 사회학 혹은 여성학 등으로 확대되고 심화될 수 있는 그녀에 대한 연구의 미래적 전망을 진단해 본다.
