This paper analyzed the content of cai luong Waiting for Kieu, a newly reinterpreted and adapted version of Truyen Kieu from a feminist perspective. Waiting for Kieu is very significant in that it gave four women who were not given any attention in the original work Truyen Kieu a chance to speak and played central roles in leading the play. It is also an interesting work in that it shows the process of four women being reborn as true speaking subjects by expressing their desires formed in their relationship with Kieu while waiting for Kieu in their own positions. Another characteristic of the play is that it gives "universality" to women's narratives by using the moon and shadow images, seasons and color symbols. However, it is regrettable that the women's waiting is limited to passive waiting and by excessively ‘idealizing’ the object of waiting, each character lost a certain amount of their individuality.

본고는 『쭈옌끼에우』를 새롭게 재해석하여 각색한 까이르엉 ｢끼에우를 기다리며｣에 나타난 ‘여성주의적 관점’을 고찰했다. ｢끼에우를 기다리며｣ 는 원작인 『쭈옌끼에우』에서는 전혀 주목 받지 못했던 네 명의 여성에게 발언의 기회를 주고 극을 이끌어가는 중심 역할을 맡겼다는 점에서 큰 의 의를 가지고 있다. 또한 네 명의 여성이 각자의 자리(입장)에서 끼에우를 기 다리며 끼에우와의 관계 속에서 형성된 자신의 욕망을 스스로 표출하면서 진정한 말하는 주체로 거듭나는 과정을 연속적으로 엮어 보여준다는 점에서 흥미로운 작품이다. 달과 그림자 이미지, 계절과 색채 상징 등을 활용해 여성들의 서사에 ‘보편성’을 부여한 것도 극이 가진 또 하나의 특징이다. 단, 여성들의 기다림이 수동적인 기다림에 그치고 있고, 대상을 지나치게 ‘이상화’함으로써 등장인물 각각의 개성을 일정 부분 상실하게 한 점은 아쉬움으로 남는다.
