This study qualitatively investigated the affective learning experiences and communication strategies of six middle school girls in English speaking classes using metaverse platforms (Replika, Ifland, and ZEP). Participants engaged in both traditional and metaverse classes over six weeks, with data collected through pre-surveys, learning reflection journals, and in-depth interviews. The results indicated that using the metaverse increased participants' interest and reduced anxiety overall. In particular, Ifland enhanced participation, However, technical issues with Replika and ZEP negatively impacted engagement. In terms of communication strategies, participants' speech volume increased by approximately 26% to 57.5% in metaverse classes compared to traditional classes. Among learning strategies, mime and code-switching strategies were most frequently used in the metaverse lessons. This study aims to provide reference materials that suggest new directions for the application of the metaverse in English education.

정부는 디지털 인재 양성을 위한 새로운 교육 공간의 필요성에 따라 영어교육 현장에서도 메타버스 활용한 교육의 잠재력에 관한 다양한 연구가 필요하다. 본 연구는 메타버스 플랫폼(Replika, Ifland, ZEP) 기반 영어 말하기 수업에서 중학교 2학년 여학생 6명의 정의적 학습경험(흥미도, 참여도, 불안감)과 의사소통 전략의 양상을 질적으로 조사하였다. 총 6주간 전통수업과 메타버스 수업을 진행하였고, 참여자들의 사전 설문조사, 학습 성찰일지, 심층 인터 뷰를 통해 수집된 자료를 분석하였다. 그 결과, 메타버스 활용 수업은 참여자들의 흥미를 높이고 불안감을 감소시켰 으며, 이프랜드는 참여도를 높였으나 레플리카와 젭은 기술적 문제로 참여도에 부정적인 영향을 미쳤다. 의사소통 전 략의 양상에서 전통수업 대비 메타버스 수업에서 참여자들의 발화량은 약 26%~57.5% 증가했고, 마임 전략과 언어전 환 전략이 가장 빈번히 활용되었다. 본 연구가 영어교육 현장에서 메타버스의 새로운 방향을 제시하는 참고 자료가 되길 바란다.
