This study focuses on content related to competition and survival among social classes, as distributed through various media in Korean society. Such content goes beyond mere winner-takes-all scenarios or class conflict, evoking ethical dilemmas. Within it, there exists an ambiguous “gray zone” where moral judgment and ethical responsibility are difficult to discern. The concept of the “gray zone” was proposed by Primo Levi, who reflected on moral dilemmas in the extreme conditions of the Auschwitz concentration camp during World War II. While P. Levi’s description of “doing whatever it took to survive” in such an extreme context cannot be straightforwardly aligned with the dynamics of our present-day society, there are still ambiguous gray zones both within and outside the structures of our society that accommodate moral compromise. In a reality where everyday life is tinged with the gray zone, isolating individuals in a daily “war” for survival, Levi urges us to confront the gray zone head-on. Levi’s insight offers us a perspective through which we can critically reflect on the ethical dilemmas in contemporary society—a society that enthusiastically consumes class conflict repackaged as cultural content, almost as if it were a spectacle of war.

본 논문은 한국사회에서 다양한 미디어를 통해 유통되는 계급들 간의 경쟁과 생존 콘텐츠들에 주목한다. 그 콘텐츠들은 단지 승자독식 혹은 계급 갈등을 넘어 윤리적 딜레마를 자아낸다. 그리고 그 안에 도덕적 판단과 윤리적 책임을 가늠할 수 없도록 모호한 ‘회색지대’가 존재한다. ‘회색지대’라는 개념은 2차 세계대전 당시 아우슈비츠 수용 소라는 참혹한 극단의 상황 속에서 도덕적 딜레마를 고민한 프리모 레비(Primo Levi)가 제시한 개념이다. 프리모 레비의 ‘살아남기 위해 인간이 저지를 수 있는 그 무엇이라도 서슴지 않았던’ 극한 상황과 현재 우리 사회의 단선적 정합성을 제시하기는 어렵다. 하지만 우리 사회에는 수용소 안에도 또 밖에도 타협할 준비를 하고 있는 모호한 회색 지대가 여전히 존재한다. 일상이 회색지대로 물들어 고립된 일상 을 전쟁으로 살아가는 현실에서 레비는 회색지대를 똑바로 마주하라 고 제언한다. 레비의 통찰은 계급 갈등을 전쟁이라는 문화 콘텐츠로 소비하며 환호하는 지금, 우리에게 윤리적 딜레마에서 벗어날 수 있는 하나의 시선을 제시할 수 있다고 본다.
