This study examines the significance of the revival of Soongsil through the lives and spirits of the two leading players in the reconstruction and revival of Soongsil: Pastor Han Kyungchik and Dr. Kim Hyung-nam. Soongsil, which decided to close as a symbol of resistance during the Japanese colonial period, was rebuilt after the Korean War with the help of its alums and showed an example of Christian education while healing the pain of the Korean War. This spirit was realized with the help of the alums of Pyongyang Soongsil, and this study focuses on Han Kyungchik and Kim Hyung-nam. Han Kyungchik laid the foundation for Soongsil as a private university based on the Christian spirit by reaffirming its basic spirit. Kim Hyung-nam actively introduced engineering education, a practical discipline, by incorporating his life experience as a businessman into the educational field, laying the foundation for Soongsil’s reputation today. They also actively formed and developed a global network, laying the foundation for Soongsil’s future. Their stories clearly show that Christian university education goes beyond the level of simple religious education and that it is about teaching specific and practical methods for living life in reality while not losing the spirit of love, and that in order to realize universal love, it is not about staying in Korea but expanding globally.

본 연구는 숭실의 재건과 부활의 두 주역인 한경직 목사와 김형남 박사의 생애와 정신을 통해서 숭실 부활의 의의를 살펴보고 있다. 일 제강점기 저항의 상징으로 폐교를 결정한 숭실은 한국 전쟁 이후에, 동문들의 힘으로 다시 재건하면서, 민족의 아픔을 치료하면서 기독교 교육의 모범을 보여주었다. 이러한 정신은 평양숭실 동문들의 힘으로 구현되었는데, 본 연구는 이들 중 한경직과 김형남에 주목한다. 한경 직은 기독교 정신에 기초한 사립대학 숭실의 기본 정신을 다시 확인하 면서 그 기초를 놓았다. 김형남은 실업가로서의 삶의 경험을 교육 현 장에 녹여내면서, 실용적인 학문인 공학교육을 적극적으로 도입함으 로 오늘날 숭실의 명성을 쌓을 수 있는 기초를 마련하였다. 또한 이들 은 적극적으로 글로벌 네트워크를 형성하고 발전시킴으로, 숭실의 미 래를 위한 기초를 함께 놓았다. 이들의 이야기는 기독교대학교육은 단순한 신앙 교육의 차원을 넘어서, 삶을 변화시키기 위해서, 현실 속에서 삶을 살아가기 위한 구체적이고 실질적인 방법을 교육하면서 도, 사랑의 정신을 잃지 않는 것이며, 보편적 사랑을 실현하기 위해서, 한국내에 머무는 것이 아니라, 글로벌하게 뻗어나가는 것임을 잘 보여 준다.
