What does it mean to become a Christian? This article, framed as a Christian ethical essay, examines how Korean Christianity during the modern transition period focused on shaping individuals into Christians by applying the concept of metamorphosis－the transformation of ‘Chosun people’ into ‘Korean people’ as modern individuals. Although the term ‘discipleship’ is relatively recent, the article highlights that Korean Christianity during this transitional period pursued discipleship not merely as part of baptismal education but as a comprehensive path to being a Christian. During this times, Korean Christianity trained ‘catechumens’ through the practice of ‘learning believers,’ who would become ‘baptized believers.’ Even after baptism, ongoing exhortation and discipline were employed to encourage living as a Christian. A notable feature of this period was the enforcement of four practical prohibitions－against concubinage, drinking, smoking, and gambling－under the broader three main prohibitions against idolatry, spirit worship, and ancestor worship. By restoring interest in sanctification, today’s Korean Christianity should overcome the tendency to limit discipleship to ‘Bible study’ and pay attention to ethical maturity through discipleship.

‘그리스도인’이 된다는 것은 무엇일까? 이 글은 하나의 기독교윤리학적 시론으로, ‘조선인’을 근대인으로서의 ‘한국인’으로 만드는 ‘메타모포시스 (metamorphosis)’에 대한 관심을 응용하여 근대 전환기 한국기독교가 ‘그 리스도인’ 만들기에 주력했음을 살펴보았다. 제자도라는 용어가 최근의 것 이기는 하지만, 근대 전환기 한국기독교의 카테케시스가 세례자교육에 그 치는 것이 아니라 ‘그리스도인’으로서의 제자됨을 추구했다는 사실에 주목 하였다. 근대 전환기 한국기독교는 ‘학습교인’이라는 훈련을 통하여 ‘세례예정 자(catechumens)’로 세운 후 ‘세례교인’이 되게 했다. 세례 이후에도 지속적 인 권면과 권징을 통하여 그리스도인으로 살아갈 것을 촉구했다. 우상숭배 금지, 귀신숭배 금지, 조상숭배 금지라는 3대 금지사항 아래 축첩금지, 금 주, 금연, 노름 금지 등 네 가지 실천 사항을 훈련시킨 것은 중요한 특징이 다. 오늘의 한국기독교는 제자도를 ‘경전에 대한 공부’에 국한시키는 경향 을 극복하고 성화에 대한 관심을 통하여 윤리성숙에 관심해야 한다
