This paper aims to develop an evaluation index to select suitable AI for teaching and learning for effective and learnercentered foreign language education in the AI era. It is based on the theoretical foundations laid out in Young-Sook Kwan and Gayun Choi's works: “Analysis Model for Selecting Online Tools for Foreign Language Teaching and Learning in the New Normal Educational Environment” (2023) and “Development of an Evaluation Checklist for Sustainable Foreign Language Education in the New Normal Era” (2023). The four main concepts of the AI evaluation index are the characteristics of the curriculum of each educational institution, the characteristics of the tool users, the various features and functions of AI, and the costs associated with using AI tools. These core concepts are hierarchically structured into perspectives, aspects belonging to those perspectives, subconcepts of the aspects as criteria, and evaluation questions demanding detailed elements of the scales. This structure ensures that the criteria for selecting AI are specific and well-defined, allowing in-depth analysis and evaluation. This AI scorecard is designed to assess the AI used to support foreign language teaching and learning. It is an open scorecard, enabling users to flexibly focus on important criteria or to omit less significant ones depending on the educational context. Based on the results of this evaluation framework, educators, particularly instructors, can select and use AI that enhance teaching and learning efficiency and promote learner-centered learning in foreign language education.

디지털 대전환 시대를 맞이하여 현대 사회는 기존의 지식을 도제 형태로 가르치는 교육(education)의 시대에서 교수자와 학습자가 상호작용을 통해 새로운 지식을 검토하면서 배워 나아가는 학습(learning)의 시대1)로 변화하고 있다. 이러한 변화의 중심에는 AI가 있다. AI는 외국어 교육에도 많은 영향을 미치고 있으며, 많은 학자들은 외국어 교육에 이러한 AI를 거 부하기보다는 적극적으로 활용해야 한다고 주장한다. 본 연구는 AI 시대에 학습자 주도적인 외국어 교육을 위해 교수와 학 습에 적합한 AI를 선별하는 평가지표 개발을 목표로 진행하였으며, 배경 이론과 선행연구 그리고 인공지능이 이끌어갈 시대적인 흐름과 교육 현장 에서의 경험을 토대로 다음과 같은 평가지표를 통해서 AI를 선정하는 것 이 합리적이라는 결론을 도출하였다: (1) 각 교육기관의 교육과정 특성, (2) AI 활용 관련 도구 사용자의 특성, (3) AI의 기능적 특성, 그리고 (4) 소요 비용. 이러한 평가 항목들은 상위 개념인 관점, 종속 개념인 속성, 그리고 속성에 속하는 하위 개념인 척도로 구성되며, 이 척도들은 세부평가 항목 들로 세분화하여 구체적인 평가 기준을 근거하여 심층적 분석과 평가를 시 행하는 경우, 교육 중심(education)이 아닌 학습(learning) 중심의 외국어 교육에 적합한 AI 선정이 가능할 것이다.
